Drive shaft play - how much is too much?
While trying to trace a clunk that I get either pulling away or reversing off the drive I checked the rear drive shaft and did find some play, but how much is too much?

I am thinking I may replace both flanges and see if that does reduce drive line sloppiness/clunks
I will upload a video to youtube later that I took of the play.

Anyway, checked for play in rear trailing arms OK
Rear A frame ball joint no movement
Shocks OK.
Wheel bearing OK
Flange bolts tight
Wheel nuts OK
Prop shaft UJs feel OK.
I did find some play in the front trailing arms (the noise could be there) 1999 Defender TD5 110

If it is like mine, there is play at every joint in the drive line. So no big play at one point but a little play everywhere making it feel like a lot off play. Roel

Evening John. That's moderately bad.

Right then mate. one more test;

Pop that flange cap off, clean up the area underneath so you can see the splines of the flange and 1/2 shaft. Then repeat your test. You will have a much better idea of whether it is the shaft or the flange that is the problem.

I suspect that it will be both the shaft and the flange with a little in the diff. This is something I know I have to replace on the 110, but have been dragging my heels...

I am sorry do I have to remind you of your pledge when you first took up being the caretaker of a Land Rover?

Repeat after me: I shalt not whine or complain should there be precipitation falling form the sky, my Land Rover comes first and should it require attention I shall head the call and answer it with dedication and efficiency...! Now pick up you spanners, coat and head torch and get to it...

Thumbs Up
