Thats reassuring...other than a slightly crunchy 1st gear and a high mileage its ok and cheap basically because its a friend of mine and they just dont want it following a family death Mike

I got mine with 136000k about 7 years ago. Now on 202000k. Only had;

Almost the same story as excossack.
Now on 182k miles, new gearbox, FPR, service items, essential performance items and soon to be either a head gasket or new head... To own and run they have a same little eccentricities that all vehicles have and some that are LR specific, but they are great fun and I love the TD5 engine. |

My '02 Disco 2 has done over 200k, it's on its original engine, gearbox, and driveline, although the transfer box (I think) is starting to growl and I have a spare lined up to fit.

Hi Blackwolf. Bump the transfer box in to neutral and check that it is not the R380. When mine went it was the support bearings and they growled and rumbled like a B-movie special effects beastie...

I have actually already tried that, but it only growls when under acceleration or deceleration, I cannot make any noise at all at in neutral on either box or when driving on the flat at steady speed. The pitch is definitely road-speed related and is the same pitch irrespective of which gear I am in, and it also does it in low box but obviously at a much lower speed for the same pitch. My conclusion is that it is either something in the output stage of the R380 or the input stage of the LT230. I have a spare LT230 but not R380, so the plan when I have time is to change the transfer box mainly to see if it affects the noise. If it doesn't, then I 'll have to look to the R380. I changed the oil in both boxes a couple of weeks ago, and there was nothing unleasant in either in terms of metal fragments or crud. The LT230 was somewhat low on oil since it has had a minor leak for about the last 150k miles and it has been a while since I topped it up. the sound reminds be of on old-style underground train (or milk-float) accelerating, almost a straight-cut gear noise, so I was quite surprised not to find filings and swarf in one or other box! |

I know exactly the noise you are referring to now, milk float accelerating down the road noise... perfect. Interestingly, my original R380 made no noises at all until the bearings collapsed. The replacement box (from ashcrofts) I had built up with the HD support bearings and now I have that old school milk float straight cut gear noise, albeit a faint one.
Anyway. A few things spring to mind. the type of noise you refer to could be caused by literally any bearing in the drive train. So, start with the easy things first, grease those prop shaft UJs up, check for play in the diff flange bearings and LT230 output flanges. Does the noise disappear if you put light pressure on the clutch pedal? if so then it is probably the release bearing. After all of that at least you are left with only the LT230 and R380 as culprits... Sorry completely hijacked this thread... |

got td5, great vehicle and I am constantly reassured this engine as long as its serviced to correct specifications will last as long as a 300tdi. I avoid non genuine filters like the plague and choose quality fluids. End of story |

I've got a 2002 Td5 so a 15p, bought it nearly 8 years ago and put just over 100K on it. Like John above I've replaced the gearbox and also the transfer box, the gearbox had the front bearing give up after time, I did let it go on untill it was a full on problem as opposed to rectifying it early on because for me it was more cost effective to just replace with a less worn one than to have the vehicle off the road for too long.
As an aside the clutch is still original at 205K, yes the dual mass can shudder a bit when hot and shunting trailers but gives no hassle at any other time. Also as previously mentioned, quality filters are a must and keep on top of any niggles unless you are going to do a full replacement of the component. With the amount of breakers around now it's not so much of an issue keeping a Td5 on the road. |

Now just under 320,000kms (200,000 miles) after a 4,600km trip from Brisbane to Perth after having an Ashcroft auto conversion. Conversion was mainly to allow wife to help with the driving when we go around Australia with the caravan. Doesn't use any fluids - except diesel at the rate of 11ltrs/100kms. Probably should look at the head as it is a 10P, but it's running so well!! Probably jinxed it now! 1955 Series 1 107" Pick up.

Bought my Defender with 180,000 on it all ran fine until recently @ 235,000 miles.
Just had new gearbox, transfer box, clutch, flywheel & associated parts. All seems to be going good again now. It all depends on how it’s been treated throughout its life I suppose. Click image to enlarge |

Oh good grief Avion you've gone and done it now mate... The local Indy owner has a saying: if it has reached this age/mileage then its a good engine...
If you are concerned do a coolant block test, its completely non-invasive. I used Dr Block Tester (eBay). worked a treat, easy to use and diagnosed a head gasket issue with my 15P. Actually quite a good idea to do this at a service interval as it is so easy and good for peace of mind. Sorry. Edited due to wrong photo...
