Very hot wheel & hub on motorway drive
After about 2.5 hours driving down the M6 from the Lakes at 70mph, I pulled into services for a break and smelt very hot/burning rubber.
On following my nose to the rear nearside, the tyre itself was only warm to the touch, but I realised that the steel wheel (wolf) was too hot to touch!
The other wheels & tyres were just warm (as expected).

After about half an hour it had cooled and I proceeded home at a slower pace, stopping about half an hour later to check the wheel, only to find it cold...

So, I'm thinking this was either a binding brake, or wheel bearing?
If binding brake, odd that filling up when home revealed an excellent 33mpg over the trip.
If bearing, why would it not have re-heated? And it isn't making any noise that I can detect.
Any ideas?

jack it up and check for play, though chances are there'll be no play, wheel off I'd check disc and pads and then remove the drive flange and look at the bearings. If the bearings are fried, you'll also almost definitely need a stub axle.

Not the end of the world.

Sounds like a seizee bearing to me!

Thanks all, I guess I'm going to have to get it looked at either way - hopefully my trusted mechanic will be able to spot the problem.
If the bearing is suspect - is it worth having both ends of the axle done at the same time?
(60K miles covered).

Yes, I would be inclined too do both sides for a number of reasons. Importantly safety and peace of mind! Thumbs Up

Conversely, I would say replacing both sides for the sake of it would just be wasting your money.

The life of a wheel bearing is far more than 60k (my front ones have now done 170k). They fail due to:

- Lack of lubrication
- Contamination
- Manufacturing or material fault

By all means strip and inspect the other side but if they’re in good condition there’s no need to replace them.

I have to agree with Retroanaconda on this. Check the other side, of course, but only replace it if there is a good reason.

Coincidentally I lost one of the plastic caps off the other side rear hub a few months back, and lost a bit of grease before fitting a replacement... but it's not that side!
So yes, I'll get both sides checked - thanks!
