That is a cracking find!
I second what Andy said above, you absolutely must not do any dismantling at all (in fact I wouldn't do anything at all to it) until you have sorted out re-registering it. I made that mistake years ago with my 1951 80" (which was in generally similar condition but with a few more bits missing) and then found that there is (almost certainly) no way now that i can recover its original and rather attractive registration. It was long before it became so difficult to get plates re-issued, but noboby back then thought that it would subsequently become so difficult. It is imperative no with any vehicle of that kind to sort the registration before anything else happems. It certainly looks like an aluminium bulkhead to me. |

A nice find and one well worth keeping as original as possible, definitely join the S1 Club as there is a wealth of information within that group of folks. If you need any chassis parts such as outriggers etc, then the Radford Brothers are your friend, top quality parts that fit superbly. Look forward to seeing you bring him/her back to life.

As everyone has said - join the S1 club. There are some good groups on facebook too for Series Ones - the Series One Brotherhood being one of my favourites.
As for the restoration, patina is very important these days, and full blown 2 pack resprays are very frowned upon! keep it original. You haven't got long for the resto - there are a few events coming up next year for Land Rover's 70th birthday - the first one is in April in Amsterdam Just to keep you motivated with winter coming - have a shufty at these 80" series ones being well used - they are slightly modified..... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

Currently sorting out a V5 for the old girl ATM. Had to send some pics to DVLA to prove that what I had stated on the form was correct Chris

Oh that is lovely.
I would want to bring it back to better than showroom, but totally original. Why is this frowned upon when its that bad? I'm on the hunt if anyone knows of one Good luck with the rebuild. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned. 1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned. 1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned. |

The bulkhead does look the same shape as the fabricated aluminium version with a steel frame clad in riveted aluminium sheet, however the skin on the drivers side looks like corroded steel. Many years ago when Series 1 bulkheads were almost impossible to obtain John Craddock had some steel ones made but fabricated very similarly to the aluminium ones. While I am not saying that this is one of those steel fabricated ones, the skin on the one in the photo looks rusted to me. |

Money says its a Craddocks one!
Can't see it clearly enough? Have a look on the top of the instrument binnacle, it will most likely have a piece above it that's riveted to the bulkhead? Although some later Craddock ones didn't have it, just to confuse things! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
