Home Made Overland Camper Trailer
Thought I'd share my attempt at building an overland camper trailer.

I started with a MK2 Sankey which was refurbed and painted. I then designed a canopy to attach to the Sankey, with internal bracing to support the ARB Simpson Roof tent. Both sides are fitted with ARB awnings which can be configured with windbreaks depending on location, prevailing wind etc.

Although fitted with 12V LED lighting throughout, I decided to go the route of carrying everything needed inside the trailer so "camp set up" on arrival rather than integrating the cooker, sink etc into the trailer. This also gives the flexibility to move the kitchen around depending on the direction of the sun / wind etc. All the gear is stored in Wolf Boxes which fit neatly between the wheelarches of the trailer and there is space for our inflatable kayak, folding bikes etc. It also means I can empty the trailer if I need to use it collecting Gumtree purchases or for taking stuff to the dump etc.

All in all it has been very successful, although always room for improvement and has been produced on a budget way below the numbers required to buy something ready made.

Pictures to follow.

I am lucky in that I work for a company who manufactures acoustic canopies for the power generation industry so the construction method was standard fare. I sketched up the concept with key dimensions and one of our cnc programmers did a 3D model of the canopy, which is fabricated in sections then bolted together. I used the standard stainless steel hinges, locks etc that are used on our customers products and assembled it using stainless hardware.

The structure is 2mm pre glavanised steel sheet that was then powder coated with industrial textured powder coat.

The design, fabrication and powder coating took a few weeks as it was a fill in job when time and capacity allowed. It only took a few hours to assemble the canopy and a couple of days to fit the roof tent, awnings etc. Plus another few weeks tweekin and finishing, electrics, gas, livery etc.

I originally had the roof tent on my 90 Tomb Raider but found it pretty restrictive as when you pitched camp, the Defender was out of action. Hence the reason for building the trailer.
