Think it just comes down to peoples preference. I have never rotated, just replacer as and when required.
For 4,000 miles a year I wouldn't be worrying about this myself |

When i swap from alloys (summer use) back to modulars with mud terrains I put them back on where they were fitted before.

Is there any reason for that, or just for consistency? If I was swapping wheels back and forth I'd do the same, but don't know why, possibly ocd

I rotate mine every 6 months/12k miles in order to even wear, mainly the directional wedging wear that tends to happen with MTs. If I ran a road biased or AT tread I probably wouldn't bother.

I want to rotate mine just to make use of the spare. Seems a waste having a brand new tyre never be used, then when you do need it the tread depth will be 100% unlike the others. Found it difficult to find a suggested tyre rotation including the spare? James

My last set of tyres I left the back two alone, then rotated the spare with the front two. It want spare, driver, passenger, spare in a loop.
If I was rotating five, I'd just extend the loop to include the rears, keep things simple! If I was rotating four, then I'd swap dianogally. I now have a half worn spare and four non worn on the road, so I will probably do it diagonally every so often. |

My tyre man told me that rotating wheels and tyres on rims is a money maker for him. He reckons it saves no money as rubber wears out eventually anyway.

But perhaps he told you that so you wouldn't do it...
... so your tyres wear out quicker and you have to buy a new set from him sooner! |

Tyre shoulder wear is the only main thing I can think of to gain.
Not too much other than that, best thing to do driving on MT's IMO is not drive and accelerate and brake like a a racing driver. That'll help a lot, plus safer anyway. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

Cannot see any advantage with AT's, particularly at 4000 miles per annum. Defender 90XS SW

I do mine yearly or every 6k miles in this fashion. I’d rather spend the money on 5 new tyres than have 4 new ones and an old unused spare.
