 Click image to enlarge I got back on the tools today and managed to get both wings and inner wings off. It looks like I'll be busy with lots of cleaning and painting to be done. On both sides the inner wing had an extra piece ice riveted on. Is this correct or has a piece of the wing been cut away in the past to get to the footwell. Click image to enlarge I came across this gadget on the drivers side inner wing. Any idea what it is? Click image to enlarge The heater air intake in the wing just butted up against the heater box. Should there be a flexi pipe between the intake and the heater? Also the engine air intake in the wing was not connected to the air filter. I guess I'm missing some ducting? Click image to enlarge The inner wing on the passenger side had a rubber flap on the rear under the heater box. Do I need one on the drivers side as well? On your inner wings, it looks like somebody has made some mud shields, much like the Glyn Lewis ones that you can buy:
Click image to enlarge The gadget on the drivers side inner wing is the resistor for the dim/dip headlights. It serves no useful purpose and can be bypassed by linking pin 2 to pin 8 of the socket for the associated relay. Lots of great progress with the strip down. I agree with LRA about the Gywn Lewis style add on mud shields.. A good mod when you get round to putting it back together

A bit more progress today. I managed to get the bulkhead out onto the floor. I only had a few seized bolts/screws and two captive nuts that spun on the bolt. Everything else came apart quite easily with a bit of patience and common sense.
I hope it all goes back together without too much grief. Maybe they are not necessary but I reckon that I had nothing to lose. The painter had it since Dec 20th but every job that came in seemed to have priority over my few bits. I had hoped to be back on the road by now but I may fit the work in between the usual house and garden maintenance that goes on every summer. |

Thanks for the interest.
After the long wait I went about fitting the replacement bulkhead this evening and had a major setback. The bulkhead mounting points at the base of the B pillars ( long bolts) did not line up with the holes in the outriggers. The original (200Tdi) has hole centres at approx 1502mm and the replacement (300Tdi) is at approx 1482mm. The outside edges of the plate are at 1600mm on the original and 1580mm on the replacement. I was informed by the seller of the bulkhead that it would be a straight swop. So what to do??? 1. Cut the feet off and move them out 10mm each side. Is it straightforward or something to be avoided? 2. Move the bolt tube within the foot/plate. 3. Cut the outriggers off and take 10mm off the inside edge. (loss of reference points). 4. Sell the replacement and get the original rebuilt. In hindsight getting the original repaired would probably have been a faster job. I didn't get as far as checking the alignment of the sill rails. Hopefully someone here has overcome this dilemma in the past and I would be grateful for any advice. I have the house to myself tomorrow and I was looking forward to getting started on the rebuild and making a bit of progress without distraction but it looks like I'll be mowing the grass. |
