I personally would not bother taking B+E test i would go out and spend test money once and take the LGV licence so you get up to 7.5 ton the same as every ones car licence used to be pre 96 ie tow with a car/van and drive a small lorry you never know when you might need it !!! If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

that is probably a very good idea. and you are quite right, many years ago i had to shift a load of very heavy clay/mud and the only real answer was a tipper lorry which needed the 7.5 ton licence. it would have been many trailer trips or even more cost if i had to hire someone to do it for me. just bite the bullet and do the test! i did and it is very very easy! ring around and find the cheapest i did it for £230 with a full days training. its not worth the fine and i know of people getting caught out and having there pride and joy crushed!

I think you need to check that...i think you still dont get the car +E entitlement unless you do the +E test on the higher entitlement, then you get it on all lower entitlements. The only one you get it on would be your HGV Mike |

mse is right on that one.
If ou take your C1 (old HGV3; 7.5T) or your C (old HGV2; over 7.5T) you can still only tow a 750Kg trailer on both your car and truck licence. When you take a +E test it upgrades all 'lower' licence catagories. So take a C+E (HGV1) and it upgrades your B to B+E. I have some silly things on my licence. Because I passed my car test after 1990 I am restricted to a van and trailer (C1+E) to less than 8.25T and my minibus (D1) is restricted to not for hire. However, I have got both my C+E and D+E (bus and trailer). So I can drive a 44T artic but not a van and trailer of 9T (with coupled brakes to meet the tow weight regs) and I can't hire a minibus with more than 9 seats but I can hire a bus! And people say the government isn't bureaucratic (don't know how to sell that  )!

I have the same abnonalies on my licence I can drive cars busses trucks tow with all of them, i also have tracked vehicles road rollers but i can't ride a bike !!!! If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
