Horse Drawn Driving Carriage and Hay Cart.

Hi,

I really do not know where to go with these, but I have a Driving Carriage and a Hay Cart that I am trying to get valued with the intention of selling owing to an impending House move. These have been in my family for certainly over 45 years.

The Driving Carriage was last used approx. 40 years ago and has been garaged since. It is completely original and never been refurbished or even touched-up. As I am not into horses or horsey things I don't know the correct terminology for these things and so I can only describe it in layman terms. It is a Handmade Driving Carriage with the original Coachwork Paint and pin striping. All the chandlery is Brass and even though it has stood for the last 40 years you can push and steer it with your little finger. It is a beautiful piece of craftmanship. I don't know the make, nor do I know the year it was made, but I remember being a passenger on it for County Shows and have photos of us both back in 1972. It was pulled by a Pair of Chestnuts(the horses, not the fruit!). It is complete with all the Patent Leather Harnesses and Leatherwork. The seats need new upholstery due to bloody mice. The photos show the carriage with partial clean to highlight the pin striping, etc..

The Hay Cart is as what you can see in the photos. Again it has been garaged for over 40 years although it moved from one garage to another and like the driving carriage moves freely although it is a lot heavier than the carriage, but as far as I can see is complete. This could definitely do from a strip down, treatment and bringing back to its former glory.

Is there alone on here who can help or point me in the right direction/s?

Lovely bits of engineering and craftsmanship.

Personally I'd advertise the carriage in London, as with emissions regulations going the way they are, it probably won't be long before we've gone full circle and horse-drawn modes of transport are all that are allowed within city limits. Probably be faster as well, however on the (thankfully) rare occasion I crossed paths with the Household Cavalry I seem to recollect that horse emissions can be fairly toxic as well

Have a look at Dragon Driving website for starters. It may give you some indication of prices as there are always lots of carriages for sale. There's also quite a lot of harness on their as well.

We had an almost identical hay cart and lots of horse-drawn tack, which we sold during our farm sale. It's amazing what some people will pay!

Maybe speak to local auctioneers? You may be able to tack it on to someone else's sale. The other one is good old facebook! I guess it's finding the right person, but no idea how you value it?!

Drew Pritchard from Salvages Hunters!! TV programme following him driving around the country buying all sorts of toot which he dusts and polishes and sells for a fortune to 'clients'. Basically, runs a salvage/antiques shop (?) James

A man who travels the country for unusual antiques that he buys for peanuts and sells for fortunes! He was also thumped in the face recently at the Liverpool Arms in Conwy the attack made most of the dailies. He has a business and showroom based in Conwy but he is trying to re-locate in leafy Berkshire.

Best advice I can give for your carts is put them in an auction house that also hosts them on the internet I have seen similar go for huge amounts of money especially the Hay cart For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Well as someone who is into and owns heavy horses [Suffolk Punch - see below] plus a few light too Thimbleby & Shoreland as mentioned above are one of the main horse drawn vehicle, harness and associated bits and bobs auction houses. They hold quarterly carriage sales and will only be too happy to value. The market is rather niche and values not as high as they were.

One of the problems with carriages, wagons and carts that have not been used and been in storage for years is that they dry out and while the coachwork can look good the timber can become brittle under the paint. Wooden wheels are the most expensive part to restore so people will pay particular attention to their condition. Any looseness between will ring warning bells. Without seeing it in the flesh I couldn't really pass accurate comment on value. Good harness and collars will fetch a decent amount but condition is everything - not only does it have to look good above all it has to still be safe - and fit the horse / pony.

I would have said that your other one was more of a general farm tip cart / Scotch cart / tumbrel that has, like many did, removable hay ladders [raves]. These were numerous, pretty much every farm used them or variations of them and they were still being produced after WWII. The body [buck] is hinged at the rear with a catch at the headboard to allow the whole load to be tipped out via the rear tailgate. Value depends on condition as above. The floors and shafts tend to rot as do the wheels if they have stood on any kind of damp surface.

Show ready condition will fetch relatively good money. I bought a fully restored East Anglian hay wagon that was part of a large well known local collection for £3,500 end of last year. Complete, solid tip carts for restoration will fetch anywhere from £100 but way less than £500, show condition substantially more. I currently have this 1850's Suffolk harvest wagon for sale but no deals in the offing yet.

Bung them both on e-bay with ridiculously high reserves, that will give you an idea of what the market is like, without having to sell them if the price is not suitable. 80" 1948
