The fuel pump in my TD5 90 started howling quite badly, so thinking possible failure was imminent I modified the rear floor to enable access without tank removal and the local land rover garage replaced the fuel pump with new OEM (not LR) unit. From the initial installation test drive and subsequent few weeks the new pump is howling loader than the original one. Can anyone please give me any pointers to the solution. Thanks in advance

Hi Miker,
Thanks for the reply, yes the LR garage did the check and I have just carried out the same, with no joy. The tank is now about half full, but is still doing it with a full tank. |

Change the fuel filter. I didn't and destroyed a 2nd pump. The cause of the initial pump failing was carbon from blow by on the injector washers
My failure to do the filter pushed carbon into the new pump too. when I stripped both pumps down to see why they had failed to was obvious 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

Thank you Gazman, that looks like a good pointer to the way forward,

Turn on the ignition (but don't start the engine) The fuel pump should whine for about 30 seconds, then stop.
lf it keeps whining then you have a fault somewhere, such as a faulty injector or an air leak. Although the Land Rover will most often run in this state, it could damage the fuel pump. |

Id change the injector seals as it could be letting air into the system causing the noise Ray

The test that l suggested above would give an indication of failed injector seals.

My own experience is the "cheaper" pumps make more noise.
I have had the all makes one and it ran for over 7yrs and was way louder than the original one, nothing wrong but I swapped it since it was getting too loud for my liking again. I have an original one now and I can barely hear it. So it doesn't matter until it stops running. The defender has migrated, leaving the owner behind. |

Mine started getting noisy about 8k miles ago and it still seems to be fine. In that time I've had a new head put on, 2 new fuel filters and tried various things... it's still going strong and I'm not going to change it but I do have a spare in the back on the off chance I get caught out one day.

I have a Lucas OEM in mine and it’s nice and quiet...
When mine failed I cut it open to find that the brushes had worn out / contacts failed - however we also found what looked like diesel bug in the bottom of the tank so took the opportunity to jets wash & dry it out followed by a treatment and new filter with the new pump. I’ve had it out again since as the breathers perished and stared to leak (recommend changing them) so while it was out I opened it back up and it’s still nice and clean ![]() Takes about 10 minutes to drop the tank from the underside 👍 |
