For the cost of them, I'd probably just replace all 4. (And yes I mean 4, there isn't a fifth!)
From memory they are just a bit fiddly to get out, inlet manifold improves access, but obviously means you have to pull the manifold! |

A long reach socket and an extension and I can manage them.
I normally get the engine warm first to aid removal. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

As stated, yes there are only four so don't look too hard for a fifth one. The fifth was, during the design process of the Storm motors, deemed to be unnecessary. Just change em all. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

From my experience, glow plugs in TD5 engine are not really needed - TD5 was to only car that started 2 years ago in winter, when it was below -25°C outside. With engine running, I had to jump start more than 10 neighbours cars, mostly petrol powered. TD5 started, but not perfectly on first turn of engine, so next day I have measured current to glow plugs (with clamp meter), and to my surprise, it was 0 Amps = no working glow plugs.
And for sure, I have good charged battery, as big as possible, and the glow plugs were replaced. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo ![]() |

+1 I don't even wait for the glow plugs, I'm not even sure if they work because I had a problem with another relay(I think it was fuel pump) and swapped them over about 3 yrs ago. I've been meaning to get another one since. It starts better than my wires tdv6 disco and all the plugs work in that! 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

The Td5 is agreat engine and does in fact start very well in rather cold climates. The issue with non functioning glow plugs is that you get poor mileage and sub optimal performance if the relay or units themselves are not working. The glow plug system in the Td5 actually will work continuously (on) while the engine is runnung until the coolant comes up to operating temperature and only then will they shut off. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

I thought most of you would understand the joke that I didn't bother looking for the fifth.
![]() It is starting a bit better now the connector to the third glowplug is connected, so 2 working instead of one. ![]() I am planning to change all 4 off them however I might need to get the inlet manifold off as a socket with my short extension is to short to get my ratchet on and my longer extension won't fit between the socket and inlet manifold. Coming back to this thread: Changing the glow plugs helped a little but not much. So I tried the battery from my D3, that didn't help either
So I tried to test the battery cables by laying a jumper cable next to it, That didn't help either so the only thing else must be the starter motor. I did really think that would be the problem as it started always but needing 20 seconds or more if it was n't used for 12 hours or more. After 6 hours or less it started quickly. So I didn't think the starter motor would be the problem but it was. A td5 startermotor is not waterproof and as I use it off-road I know I have to clean it sometimes. This time when I took it out it was very difficult to turn it by hand. Even when I had the motor part apart it turned very difficult so I took the gearing part apart and the grease in there was more or less solid. I cleaned it out and put some new grease in there and now it starts within a second. I didn't expect that grease could have that effect.
