Today my dog guard arrived from Duckworth Parts (thanks Dan) and this evening I set out to fit it...
It all began so well: Click image to enlarge Then I discovered that I don't have a Forked Trim Removal Tool. My response, use a flat blade screwdriver, this didn't work. Then I discovered that the bolts through the floor, which have to be removed to fit the tabs into which the bottom half of the guard will attach, are rusted up and the nut has been made of monkey metal which rounded off as soon as any pressure was applied... Now I fear I will have to go and buy an angle-grinder to cut the tops off, knock the remaining scrap through and source new fixings... |

So, back to it... Reinforcements have arrived in the form of a Dremel and an extra drill bit. Also bolts. Many many bolts because I had no idea exactly how long the replacements would need to be.
Click image to enlarge The recalcitrant bolts were duly despatched Click image to enlarge Leaving this as my canvas on which to create new engineering (for which read, some zinc plated bolts, washers etc.) Click image to enlarge Then the lower half could be properly anchored - having plucked up sufficient courage to take a Stanley (type) knife to my otherwise virtually spotless carpet. Click image to enlarge The carpet at the edge of the seat box was however no longer spotless as I had dropped the cut head of one of the bolts on it, not realising just how hot it still was. I now have a permanent 13mm hex shaped reminder of the bloody thing... Anyway, several skinned knuckles, some brute force and ignorance (I hadn't sourced a trim removal tool) and an awful lot of swearing later - behold. A dog guard, fitted in only about 4 hours working time... At LR dealership rates I think I'm still in profit even if I tally up the costs of all the tools and tea. Click image to enlarge |

Yeah, and I'm not sure what they're for, other than rusting solid before some poor sod decides to fit a dog guard?
I have also now realised the number of times I have been used to just reaching over into the back for stuff... now that I can't! |

its rarely I use the back of my defender, I think the rear door has only been opened a number of times, and the rear bench seat has been sat on twice! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
