Dealer said that they already unscrewed the dipstick tube to see if the broken off part was stuck in there, but apparently not. Guess most likely it sits somewhere at the bottom of the sump. New sump and pasta are on order for Tuesday install.
When you do a search for broken dipstick on here, you will read several comments that the intake pipe/pump has a gauze fitted, so little chance the piece could be sucked into the engine, let alone pass the oil filter as a first step.
Will discuss at dealer Monday, then get the new sump installed Tuesday.

I'm yet to see any engine that doesn't have one. Possibly if you go back to the 1940's or earlier you might find one without a strainer of some kind.

Have you had it from new? It's possible someone lost the original and shoved something from another vehicle in there.
I assume you've pulled it out? As the tops of all of them are plastic for about the first 6 inches.

So this morning the new sump arrived at my dealer (sorry, retailer) Rolling Eyes Laughing
The just fresh oil was drained again, old sump taken off, and yes, the broken off dipstick tip was in there. No way to use a magnet to draw it to the drainage hole as the dipstick tip is aluminium.
As dealer said that reinstalling a sump after removing is a guarantee for leaks as the sump by definition will have deformed, brand new sump installed again with fresh paste. No leaks. A new dipstick is on order, but this seems a factory order so will take about 10 days or so. They put in the correct amount of 6.8 liters of fresh oil again, and I just have to trust that the level is good as the dipstick for now is sitting in there without the measuring tip.
Those who have been here for a long time will remember that this is not a unique fault, quite a few threads exist about this very same problem. As I still checked the oil myself about three weeks ago before going on a holiday trip, and knowing about this problem I always remove the dipstick carefully, I did not notice anything at that moment that something was about the break off. Never had any real resistance when removing the dipstick, so seems a case of poor quality metal fatigue.
Conclusion is that Defender Tdci dipsticks are consumables, mine broke after 9 years, but quite a few do earlier than that. I guess from now on I am going to keep a spare in storage, and even if nothing appears wrong, replace it every 4 or 5 years now.
The good thing to know is that dealer confirmed nothing bad could have happened, from the sump to the oil filter there is a strainer, so no way that a broken off piece which is left to sit in the sump would ever be able to make it into the oil filter, let alone the engine.
Just have to dig out my Dinitrol cans in a few weeks from now, and when there indeed are zero leaks, Dinitrol the new sump.

If that is what it looks like a Mazak die casting onto the end of a steel braid rope I am impressed that it lasted as long as nine years inside an engine.
The spring steel dipsticks were just too an expensive an idea for Ford Rolling Eyes 1995 Defender 110 CSW

I knew nothing of this as an issue, thanks for sharing Thumbs Up

I did however notice my dipstick was sticking 10-15% of the way up just after i bought it 9 years ago. I took the dipstick out and ground the top edge of the alloy measure at the bottom down to a very gentle taper. It now slips out with ease after one tug of the yellow hoop.

That statement needs to be taken in the context of this thread. Rolling with laughter 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned.

1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned.

That would be seven then now Sad

Just made an oil change and of course AFTER having filled it with new oil the tip has broken off. I've now drained the oil and was about to take the sump down. But after reading that there is no danger the tip interfering with the engine (not even with the crankshaft?) I probably just fill the oil again and order a new dipstick.

Out of interest how do you remove/insert the dipstick when checking?

Could it be that placing the end of the dipstick on the top of the tube and pushing as it goes down has over time caused this damage?

I tend to hold the wire several inches above the end with my right hand and bend the wire down with my left to ensure the first six inches or so go down the tube exactly square.
