Fuel gauge failure
After some unusual readings (indicated fuel level too low) the gauge sits down at zero now, reporting low fuel alarm each time I start the engine.

I wonder what will happen if I continue to drive - will fuel management system stop the engine after certain number of kilometres to prevent total out of fuel? Janusz

As i know it depends on model year... 2.2 and may be late 2.4 will cut off the engine... early 2.4 will not... IMHO

Eventually the ECU will start to make the engine misfire, then it will cut out and only allow you to drive a mile at a time to protect itself.

Quote:
LOW FUEL INDICATION AND RUN DRY STRATEGY
The run-dry strategy is used to maintain the systems fuel prime at fuel run out. It ensures the minimum amount of fuel is always left in the swirl pot.

The instrument cluster activates the yellow low fuel warning light (next to the fuel gauge) with 17% of fuel remaining in the tank. The fuel gauge will indicate empty with 12% of fuel left in the tank. With 6 liters left in the tank the run-dry strategy will be invoked.

An engine mis-fire will be induced for approximately 1 mile after which the engine will be shut down. The engine can be re-started in mis-fire mode and will continue to run for a further mile until the engine shuts down again. This can be repeated until the fuel suction port in the tank is uncovered and causes engine fuel starvation and loss of prime.

Re-starts after run-dry shut down are not recommended.

The solution is to fix the sender Laughing

I have an early Puma I guess. 115 km on 'empty' and still going on without misfire.

1. check wiring only two wires with multimeter may open cct

2. fuel sender may be open cct

Thank you! I was just looking at the same diagrams.
As far as I understand, the fuel level sensor is resistor type. Do you know the min-max values of the resistor? If known, I can plug proper resistor into the connector at the tank and see what the gauge shows.
Or there are easier ways to check it? Janusz

As the follow up to the story. I have removed suspected gauge and investigated the sensor. It is encoder, not resistance type, so will not show any resistance (open / infinity). See the pictures.
