Spent a couple of hours yesterday fitting one of these following a recommendation on here. What a difference it's made. No more crashing, banging and rattling going over potholes, sleeping policemen and the like. Wish I'd fitted one years ago now.

Hi
If the Mantec Spare Wheel Carrier does develop a rattle... Then it will (almost certainly) be the Main Securing Bolt (from the Nylon 'Piston') rattling within the 'slot' of the Swing Away 'element' The Fix... Take 2 M12 Nylock Nuts...and grind a Chamfer on one removing the Nylock Element Click image to enlarge Screw on the Chamfered Nut towards the Slot Click image to enlarge Tighten up the Chamfered Nut...into the Slot (which has become wider than the M12 Bolt Click image to enlarge Apply the Standard M12 Nut to Lock the new arrangement Click image to enlarge If the rattle returns...then take up the further 'opening' of the Slot Mine was quite for 18 Months / 15K miles, then a rattle...now OK for last 5K Click image to enlarge Good Luck... I like the idea of a spare wheel carrier, but as usual it requires extra holes drilling in the bodywork.
I already had to replace the rear corner cappings because a previous owned blathered them with a drill to fit lamp guards. |

When I fitted mine I drilled the main ginge bolts so I could easily grease them.

Hello lightning You are right this is a consideration, but the Mantec requires that only 2 'new' holes be made, to secure the Top Bracket...and to be precise, these, depending on the tolerance / build quality of your Defender are pre-existing Rivet Positions (at 60mm Centers) that if in the right location, just need to be enlarged. So actually No new holes (in my case) just an adjustment of 2 existing. Top Bracket X2 Holes (pre-existing Rivet Positions) Click image to enlarge Door Panel X6 Holes (Pre-existing No adjustment) Click image to enlarge Bottom Bracket X4 Holes (Pre-existing No adjustment) Click image to enlarge Land Rover did improve the Strength of the Rear Door (I think in 2007 with the introduction of the Puma) but the Hinges have remained the same from the 200 & 300 tdis. A Spare Wheel Carries does help to take (spread) the weight of the Wheel away from being centered on the Rear Door, it is not uncommon to have the rear door 'break its back'....cracking the second skin, or in earlier versions the inner support structure. If you have Larger / Heavier Wheels than standard then it's worth considering, as a 'normal' cost Spare Wheel Carrier, will be less expensive than replacing a rear door back to standard / factory spec' Inner Rear Door Structure (Puma) Click image to enlarge Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

The nakatanenga wheel carrier requires no bodywork holes and is stainless so won't rust either. Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

It's also nearly three times the price of the Mantec version which, by comparison, becomes good value.

But how much will it cost to repair the back end when either the capping or the Mantec carrier rot away Ray

We are possibly on a road to nowhere trying to justify what we spend on our Defenders.
I freely admit that at times I have been taken in by 'I like it'... 'I want it'... 'I've bought it'...'how much' these 'attacks' are becoming less frequent with 'experience'. But I'll give you my reasoning on this (for those interested)... The nakatanenga wheel carrier is probably a first rate bit of kit (but I have no experience of it) it 'reviews' well on here, but for me it is just too expensive...the price would need to ideally start with a '3' (4 at a push) for me to give it seriously consideration. The Mantec could be better in a few areas, but I've been impressed so far, I liked it as for me it sort of matches the NAS Rear step again good enough but has its 'could be better' areas (the rubbish thin steel plate under the rubber tread...this will need replacing in time). I treated and sealed the internals all the tubing of both these products, with Dinitrol (along with my side steps) to hopefully slow down the rotting from the inside out 'phenomenon' of many after market bolt on bits for Land Rovers. Sealing the two holes in the Rail (Capping) was easy enough, and I really don't think with the 'riot' of holes and rivets on a Defender, this will be a weak point to a faster than normal failure. My Mantec was £220 (inc vat / typically these are around £250 inc) If I'd have opted for a nakatanenga it would have been more than the cost of my Spare Wheel...which just wouldn't of felt right. Click image to enlarge I'll see in time how the Mantec 'holds up', but after 20K, and one mod' to improve things, its looking OK. SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

If the Mantec works for you, great. If others buy the Nakatanenga and they think it is money well spent, great. Personally, mine is still screwed to the door, but it's something that will need to be addressed before soon. |
