Considering that europe is/should be well organized(is it?) in terms of such things (car theft), where is the market for all that stolen Defenders?? Over here, you can still buy brand new double cabs 110, so i was under impression that market is..saturated and theft is minimal??

Doesn't take too much time either if someone wants to take the doors, bonnet, etc... Maybe even half the time / effort one would need to a Defender?

I have a Transporter myself and yes, they can tow very well. Unless you're converting to a camper van though they can have commercial van speed limits (depends on how they were registered). The biggest issue though is that they are very expensive to buy in the UK. For some reason they keep their price really well, so much so that, unless you're buying very new, you can buy a similar year Range Rover for about the same price. I think they hold their price for the same reason Defenders do, people want them for the brand/style/accessories availability. The Transit Custom is a better alternative in terms of value i think.

What about a Hyundai Santa Fe? 2.5t towing, even the base spec one that my dad's just bought has two stage heated rear leather seats amongst other niceties. Plenty of space for dogs in them. Comfortable, quiet when cruising, 5 year warranty, ....

If you know someone that works for the government/council/military you can get a fairly hefty discount too.

Like the Defender the ranger can be a grey area for speed limits as some of them are over 2040kg unladen and some aren't it depends on spec. But when was the last time you saw a van doing 50 on a single carriageway?

There are plenty of double cabs that would meet you requirements for carrying dogs, children and kit which have good towing capability. Prior to having our Defender we had an Isuzu D-Max. However, after experience of a double cab and a Defender there is no way we would go back to one. Compared to a Defender they are so wide to drive around country lanes. We were really surprised when we looked at the Defender stats to note it was half a meter narrower than the D-Max. We also transport a lot of dogs and in particular we have noticed that they are so much happier in the Defender being able to see and hear you. Also, if dogs are a big part of your life you don’t have the problem of their hair weaving its way into upholstery with a Defender. I’d stick with it.

Half a meter shorter maybe, but not narrower. There's only about 70-80mm in it, width wise, depending on model. Darren

Lots of Wranglers in Aussie, much cheaper than Defenders too.
The most popular vehicle is the Toyota Hilux,.....they are EVERYWHERE, but of recent date they are being challenged by the Ford Ranger which is winning votes with its 3.2L engine.
Plenty of Nissan Navarras,, Mazda BT50, & a vehicle which is starting to make its mark is the VW Amarok which, if so optioned, can have the most powerful engine, a 170KW TT diesel, but this option is quite expensive.
Up until now, Aussie has been the "Land of the Ute",..Holden have been the leader for years with the classic "Holden Ute", which have been available for over 60 years. Current models of the Holden "Ute" are available with engines including the 6.2L supercharged LSA which at 435KW makes for a very exciting ride,.....but all Holden ute manufacture will finish in October this year so the classic "Aussie Ute" will be no more. But this is increasing the appeal of the "Twin Cab" which is now the most popular vehicle configuration in Aussie.
Nothing to do with this thread, but in view of the popularity of Twin Cabs, our "V8 Ute" Series run alongside V8 Supercars, will from 2018 be replaced with a "Super Ute" Series running Diesel twin cab utes, demonstrating the popularity of these vehicles.
So yeah, Twin Cabs are very big in Aussie. Mercedes are entering this market, & I suppose it will be interesting to see if any "New" Defender is available in this configuration. My opinion is that they will not be price competitive, & so not be a big contender.
Very few Defenders in every day use in Aussie, even fewer in a working capacity. It's been that way for a long time. We were out in our 90 all day yesterday, we saw 1, invariably we don't see any at all.
