Due to greasy balls I am about to investigate and repair the problem (hopefully)...
been looking at swivel repair kits and found the Britpart one - has anyone used this kit and would you recommend it? Defender has done 58k Just want to ensure I have the right components as due to go into hospital shortly for right hand op that is likely to prevent any serious work for at least 2 months. 2006 TD5 2002 Honda Transalp 650 1995 Yamaha Vmax 1200 2014 Nissan Juke (wifes) |

The Britpart kit is utter crap. Use Timken bearings only if replacing the swivel bearings

Have you already gone down the 'one shot' route?

done nothing other than clean them up for MOT as there was oil/grease on front tyres when it stood for a while
When I changed the oils the front diff looked fine - no signs of grease ingress from swivels Can easily get some one-shot and put it in to see if that helps at all 2006 TD5 2002 Honda Transalp 650 1995 Yamaha Vmax 1200 2014 Nissan Juke (wifes) |

It would have had one shot from new I believe being a TD5. Assuming the swivel balls themselves are not rusty and pitted and the swivel bearings are in good order you could strip and clean then just replace the main swivel seal and a few gaskets.
Often leakage of grease from the swivels occurs when the swivel bearings have some play though, worth checking it all over and re-shimming if required. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

I would not cut the seal. OK it is less work but getting the complete hub off is not that much work. You don't need to rebuild the whole assembly. You can take it off the axle body and then just replace the seal.
Not a very clear picture but I think you can see what I mean. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

I bought a kit recently from a local supplier here (Melbourne, Aust.) which turned out to be from Bearmach. I was given the opportunity to specify Timken bearings. This kit looked good & the top pin was well machined which is more than one can say for Britpart.
It is important to get a good quality bearing pair - particularly the bottom one. Cheers, Lionel |

Give Dan Roberts a call or email (danroberts@duckworthlandrover.co.uk or call on 01673 842101)
He provided some parts at reasonable prices and most bits I needed were genuine LR Just pricing the replacement swivels I need currently. 2006 TD5 2002 Honda Transalp 650 1995 Yamaha Vmax 1200 2014 Nissan Juke (wifes) |
