Starting woes
So my TD5 has never had an issue starting, minus 15 outside no problem... I barely have to turn the key and she's off and running... until now

In the past month, basking in the summer sun, she has on occasion taken as long as 4 or 5 seconds to fire up... this has always been from cold-start, never once she's been running for a while.

What might be the most likely cause? Glow plugs were done in the last year when the HG was done.

She generally runs sweet as a nut, pulls hard and never coughs or splutters.

Thanks,

Stig

Grease tends to dry up in this weather so the starter gear mechanism could be binding.
Have you checked for voltage drop on cranking? Some will be normal, but below 7v you’ll have a battery issue

could do with some more detail, smoke on cranking? slow cranking? instant deterioration or over time steadily got worse? mileage? fuel pump noises? etc etc

could be fuel issues assuming battery is good, cracked filter housing and failed pumps are common. Cheers

The fuel pump has been whining for as long as I can remember, 2 years or more.
No smoke.
90k miles; HG was done about 5k ago.
Fuel filter replaced at service about 2k ago.
Turns over easily and quick (i'll check the rpm when I get a chance).
It only started doing this in the last couple of weeks (about 3 weeks after serving the solenoid on the starter - in situ, did not remove starter)
The battery does lose charge over time and 3 weeks of no use will leave it unable to turn the engine over - there's a current draw on the battery of about 0.03A when off (from memory... although trying to remember if it was 30 or 300 milliamps)
No loss in power.
Starts very happily when hot/only happens when cold starting.
Fuel gauge currently on 1/4 and has been unhappy last few times - will fill up tonight as I read somewhere about people suffering this on less than a half tank but not above.

any noise from the fuel filter housing?

the pumps like to be kept cool with lots of fuel in the tank, is pump is weak or bleed back to the tank then filling cant hurt it.

doesnt sound electrical

my current vote is on fuel running back to the tank.

if you prime the fuel system prior to starting (10pumps on accelerator with ign on) what does it do when you then try to start?

its shouldnt go flat in 3 weeks. Cheers
