Gearbox off - DIY job?
As per previous threads I have a leaking crank main seal and am toying with the idea of doing it myself and changing the clutch and various other bits while I'm at it (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56024.html)

Is this a side of the road DIY job? I'm a fairly competent spannerer having stripped a few cars to a bare shell and rebuilt. Defender is my second vehicle so no immediate rush.

I did mine on my drive, over a weekend, pretty much on my own, with occasional help from the missus to operate lifting gear and the use of a child here and there to fetch and pass spanners etc.

Depending on how busy the road is, I'd say yes. You'll probably need access from the side with an engine crane or jack.

No reason why it shouldn't be. You will need to raise the vehicle a certain amount to create enough clearance to get the gearbox out from underneath (I park mine on blocks for this). I would also recommend taking the transfer box off the gearbox first, the the gearbox off the engine. Remember that you are lifting heavy components above you, either the t-box or gearbox is heavy enough to cause life-changing injuries if you drop it on yourself, so be sensible.

I use a gearbox jack for lowering the boxes, but many people use an engine crane through the floor. Either approach works well.

It is not a job for the feint-hearted, but it is not difficult. You will need a clutch aligning tool, of course.

Agreed with above. It's hard work, and heavy, but achievable at side of road. Currently doing a friends in the alleyway behind his house!
