Black smoke and funny noise!!!!
Hello All
On my way bak from fairford in my 90 yesterday and suddenly the engine started making rough whisling noises and loads of black smoke coming out of the exhaust at around 2000-above revs and 50+mpg below that was fine
So i stopped thinking of the worse!!
And it was steaming like crazy and the exhuast pipe under the chassis! Engine temp all fine
On a cold engine it does the same but white smoke
It has got a oil leak in the engine somewhere but dont know wheather that would be something to do with it....
Can anyone throw some good ideas across because i dont really want to drive it until it sorted

Many thanks
Arran jones

Sounds to me like the intercooler hose has split, relatively simple fix.

Ok thanks so much
Wouldnt of thought that would make the exhaust do that but will check....
Can i check if its split by just looking inside the engine???

The black smoke is due to over-fuelling because of lost boost (air) pressure to the engine, the whistling noise will be the sound of the turbo "escaping" from the split pipe.

Should be able to locate it fairly easy, look or feel along the thickish pipes from the turbo to the intercooler and intercooler to throttle body, you might find an oily patch along there where the leak is.

You could even find one of them has just slipped off at one end if it's not been secured properly

It is more commonly true than in a diesel engine black smoke in exhaust is from fuel not oil. Too much fuel will mean smoke.

Yep you should be able to find it with a bit of a poke around the engine bay. Engine running and a torch, most likely location is the hose which runs close to the steering column thingy (sorry don’t know the proper name) on the right hand side of the car looking forwards, left side as you look backwards from the front.

The steering column can gradually rub through the hose, as happened to me.

Hole in hose = whistle, plus lack of boost means overfueing = black smoke..

Hope that helps! Thumbs Up Cheers, David
