1989 Defender 90 V8 Petrol CSW Alpine White
non starter after clutch change
Dammit, just when I thought it was going so well......

Having spent ages, carefully removing the gearbox and changing the clutch, I finished putting it back together today.

The damn thing turns over but doesn't start.

I took great care to ensure we didn't dislodge any wires, or drag any looms when we pulled the box.... so I am reasonably sure no wiring damage took place. I also did check the crank sensor was reconnected properly.

Any ideas on what could have happened here? At a bit of a loss really. V8 90...WIP

Yup. All were labelled and connected.

I really took a lot of time over the whole job... as its a second car I could plod along and make it enjoyable rather than a chore. V8 90...WIP

Immobiliser?

Lock it, leave it to set, unlock and try again?

GOOD LUCK

It turns over, so not the immobiliser. But I did try that too anyway. V8 90...WIP

Perhaps if you give some details of the engine and which injection system you are using ? A 1989 V8 would be on carbs and wouldn't have a crank sensor. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Lol.

It's my 2.2 puma usw 2013. I had sort of assumed that was self explanatory because as you say, the v8 doesn't have a crank sensor.

It really needs a plug in to get some live data but I don't have any trickery to do that with. I assume that somehow in unplugging stuff I have fractured a cable. I don't know if it's possible to check the crank sensor function without an oscilloscope or an engine diagnostic tool? V8 90...WIP

So an update. My LR dealer says he doesn't know when he can get a new crank sensor "they are on back order with Land rover" he says.

I checked the wiring for continuity to the plug, the three wires to the crank sensor are all good. The plug is clean and located well.

Is the Engine light (the yellow engine picture on the dash) supposed to stay alight after the system self checks and only go out once the vehicle is started, or does it go out straight away once the self checks are done? V8 90...WIP

Clearly been previously fiddled with.. No outer protection and rubbing on the brake pedal box bolt. I assume I pulled it whilst fitting trim and clutch V8 90...WIP
