Nice project. I have recently bought an 86 factory V8 90 as a substitute for my Series 1 which I have given my son.
Early 90/110's are where its at |

Thanks - I'll have a closer look at the grill, I thought it might be factory cut for the hole in the front panel that I presume is a flash back to having a starting handle?
The plan so far; 1. Stripping rear suspension and welding on a new rear half chassis I have, to give it a few more years I hope before a galv chassis 2. Repair a spare good 300tdi bulkhead, galv and swap over 3. New front wheel bearing 4. Recon or second hand 4 hole steering box (leaking) 5. New side b c posts, send them for galv with bulkhead 6. Take cappings off and galv them as well 7. Repaint as I go along, although I haven't worked out what type of red it should be as not recorded on the vin plate and there are several shades to pick from 8. New exhaust - it has a discovery 200tdi engine, but I think it still has the 2.5n/a system, which I believe is too small but I need to replace the rear section so may have to replace it all of I need 2.5tdi size 9. Doors scabby with aluminium bubbling, but he door frames are actually sound. May experiment taking the aluminium off, repairing the frames, galving them and refitting the pitted aluminium skins unless I can buy the early type skins new? Then hopefully an MOT! So the overall plan is a rolling renovation but nothing non standard, other than the 200tdi. |

As far as the paint colour is concerned, if that is Red it either Masai Red or Venetian Red. They were the only reds for that age of vehicle but they were a bright red.
From the photo it doesn't look red, more like a faded Roan Brown, which was replaced by Arizona Tan (but it might look different in the flesh). I notice the cappings have been painted. Are they galv'd underneath? If so the vehicle has been re-painted at some stage. Not many have survived from this era in reasonable condition, so preserving originality might pay in the long term (but whatever you do with the Td5 rear crossmember, a rivet-counter will know it's a Td5 rear crossmember! ) Good luck with the resto, old One Tens are beginning to be appreciated as they should be. |

The move to painted bumpers and cappings was more a styling thing as LR tried to give Defenders a more "modern" rather than agricultural appearance. I still prefer galvanised bumpers and cappings though.
