I had three injector seals and copper washers replaced a couple of months ago, as you stated in you post its a good idea to remove the engine cover, from time to time I do this, and noticed them leaking, as I have extended warranty my dealer carried out all the work and replaced the high pressure fuel pipes attached at the same time, so all sorted for the time being

The injectors seldom get stuck as they're soaked in oil all the time, but they'll certainly be in the best place to have the spray pattern checked and cleaned.
I think you'll be surprised at how much better it goes once the new washers are fitted. They do run surprisingly well will the injectors blowing badly! |

The book says you should replace the pipes, as they have a deformable bit on the end to seal them, but in reality they can be reused several times. |

So I've had the defender back for a few weeks since it had it seals replaced and I still have issues. It still doesn't feel like it's running as it should do... the idle has almost a pulsating sensation. I cleaned the MAP sensor last week and took it out today to a fresh coating of oil. Removing the oil cap sends a spray of oil, audible release of pressure still - I assume more than is normal. Although can anyone suggest what a normal amount of crankcase pressure in a 2.4 Is?
Obviously my first port of call we be back at the garage that did the work ensuring the seals were replaced correctly and not failed. But past that, what must I consider... turbo? (Got no noise), piston rings? |

It could be the breather is clogged up with sooty sludge from where the injectors were leaking.

I've had the breather pipe off and it isn't blocked but I haven't ran it disconnect to feel if it could be blocked inside the rocker cover

The round bit in the rocker cover is a valve, i forget exactly how it works, but think it should be sucked shut when the vacuum goes up, then pushed open again if the crank case pressure goes up. maybe its bunged up.

Ok, I never dawned on me this could be a valve... would a suitable test be to remove one end of the breather, bung the hole in the intake and see if I can feel the pressure through the hose?

So I ran it was the hose disconnected and noticed very very little pressure through the breather removing the filler cap released a lot of pressure again suggesting it's blocked, any idea how to get to the valve - is it cover off?

I've looked at the valve, a simple spring loaded thing, it was dirty but operated. I tonights lighting I could see smoke from the breather and the oil cap removed so I'm back to thinking/hoping the injector seals weren't sealed correctly....

It's possible they didn't clean the injector seats correctly when they refitted them, so they're not sealing correctly.

Idle pulsating could be the much discussed VCV? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I think zsd-puma could be right. I had mine done by a local guy who has done countless Transits and he had a special tool to clean off the seats. It looked like a counter sunk drill bit but he assured me it is quite gentle in operation and that it is a pointless exercise replacing them without this crucial step. Only one of my seals were leaking but it had a profound effect on oil consumption, burnt smell on the oil, combustion crud fed straight through the turbo etc. This is a real Tdci design issue that most people don't notice, exacerbated by the 2 weedy clamp bolts that hold everything in place. What was really annoying was that in 6 years I have only done 50k miles and apart from towing the caravan twice a year its been babied ( no off roading) with oil changes every 4k miles.
Another problem might be the injectors not put back in the holes they came from necessitating a pilot relearn - a pain because after a few years the tiny 16 digit codes are almost impossible to read ! One thing I've learned is that an experienced Indy is the way to go for all other Defender work but when it comes to that engine forget them and head for Ford/tdci/transit specialists . |
