I think your idea is a good one the V8 Landie that I used to own really was a different vehicle to the diesel though I really do like the diesel both have their pros and cons with the V8 the problem is the fuel consumption .... but I have a plan....
My plan is to fit the rover v8 initially and see how that goes ( get the fuel system , cooling, exhaust, ECU, etc all working well) but ultimately what I would like to fit is a Jaguar V8 even the 3.2 litre has 240 horsepower and gives reasonably good fuel consumption ( Ive had 27 mpg in a jag weighing 1800KGs )... imagine this on gas... equivelent to 45 + MPG Whilst also this engine has very few problems the only real one being the timing chain which has normally been replaced on any second-hand vehicle. These engines are available for £150 to £200 .... yes really.... look at EBAY, they dont go wrong so have no value secondhand. So my plan is to get the vehicle working with the rover v8 and then probably look at fitting a 3.2 or even 4 litre ( 290 hp) Jaguar engine for both extra economy and extra power as it is a far more modern and superior engine .... the problem with this would be an adaptor plate ( might not be needed as same auto box as Disco) and also the ECU from the Jaguar cannot be used ..........however I plan to make my own ECU, I bought a megasquirt and had a look at that but the electronics in it are absolutely awful so I think it would be easier / more reliable just to make one , which I have started to do, (see below) My background is playing with Jaguars I have 1978 Jaguar coupe with a straight 6 supercharged engine as my main project at the moment but I am helping a friend to fit a manual gearbox to my old Jaguar xj8 R which I recently sold to him , these are not normally available with a manual gearbox so we have to make an ECU and an adaptor plate for the manual gearbox he is doing the mechanical side I am doing the electronic side as that is my trade. He wants to do a kit as he recons 400HP ( easily available fom a XJR ( 370 standard)) and a manual gearbox with the correct ECU would be a big seller....... 400 HP in a 90.... not for me thanks !! 1984 300TDi hardtop Stornoway Grey 1984 200TDi hardtop..... soon to be a V8 .. but which V8 ? 1974 DAF T244 4x4 wagon converted to a motorhome 1976 Jaguar XJC with supercharged engine |

Hi Jim, how's the build going?
Have go had a chance to check the V8 yet? - this is what my brothers looks like... Fingers crossed it doesn't look like there's much sludge but going to get stripped & measured before a rebuild with skimmed head, new bearings & rings etc. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Well , not done much as the Disco developed a really bad misfire... and now wont even start !
However before this i managed to do a 'sniff test' an although very little air seemed to go through the unit, it stayed blue, so head gasket is OK. Still had MASSIVE white smoke... then it cleared, got a code reader which says all ok except the left bank REALLY rich and right bank REALLY weak. so changed tune resistor to ' no lambdas' .... no difference. Changed plugs, no better, changed coil, no better, went to do compression test and cant find my compression tester ( I know I had it 10 years ago) so sent for another, but no water coming out of plug holes . At the moment seriously thinking of just binning this rubbish rover engine and just putting the Jag one in ( if I had it now, thats what I would do) Hope to strip the Disco down this weekend, but reluctant as cant get it started..... in the meantime ordered the steel to start welding the bulkhead and seat box. Landie now stripped to just rolling chassis and bulkhead Click image to enlarge 1984 300TDi hardtop Stornoway Grey 1984 200TDi hardtop..... soon to be a V8 .. but which V8 ? 1974 DAF T244 4x4 wagon converted to a motorhome 1976 Jaguar XJC with supercharged engine |

Now you're putting me off the V8 idea... although it sounds like it is engine management based & as Td5s have electronics too I guess there is also a risk with them. Sounds like you are doing the equivalent of 'man maths' to convince yourself not to just go and get a Jag V8 and stick that in when you already know that is probably the best thing to do from the start? More reason, if one is needed, for me to source a driveable 3.9 D1 and run it for a while to make sure it is all sound before thinking about a transplant. Am focusing at the moment on accumulating the bits and bobs needed to fabricate a custom rear canopy for a DC - just sourced a 'scrap' 90 smooth roof for a score - needs work but then I'm going to cut it up anyway Got my eye on some side panels locally and on the look out for an old sunroof from a D1 (200Tdi era) or Defender and a sliding rear window from a Defender truck cab plus the roof to tub fixings, oh and a rear door & hinges. Going to the Newbury 4x4 auto jumble at the end of the month with a long shopping list, a pocket full of cash and the back seats folded flat in the D4. |

Thanks Jim that's a very kind offer - got to be worth a brew & a bacon buttie
I've also got a swing away wheel carrier on the shopping list too... Let me know by PM if you are going to Newbury and we'll exchange phone numbers. Cheers. P.S. bought a Jag V8 yet... |

Just had a look at a 300 Tdi Disco down the road - that type of roof is not going to work for me, not least because of the curve in it... Looks like I need one out of a Defender then after all. Thanks anyway Jim. |

Well, the rebuilt V8 is nestled back where it belongs
Got to refit things like headers/exhaust, flush out rad & heater matrix, refit ancillaries, etc. Shouldn't be long before its back on the road. How's your rebuild going Jim?? |
