Could be steering damper, but if it's that bad then it's more likely to be the pre-load on the swivels. Darren

hi all,
i just bought a td5 that was unused for 2 years apart from the occasional startup. my first drive in her is pretty close to what you are describing. steering damper was shot, all the bushes in the front suspension had disintegrated along with steering rod and stabiliser. she back to new now. swaini |

I've had that problem and it was the preload on the swivels.

It is the preload on the swivel bearings. A steering damper helps but is not the solution off the problem. Roel

Thanks everyone again for all the advice. I am going to change the steering damper anyway as it looks very tired. I looked at the swivel housing sets and they are reasonable but I imagine that my garage will take quite a while to change them so expecting it to be expensive.
Cheers again |

Did mine in the driveway - and I'm hardly a mechanic! I'm sure we can help you through it, my guess, taking it easy is two days, although there will be others that suggest only half, with a cup of tea. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Swivels are worth a check but also check the panhard rod. 99 times out of a hundred there's play in the bushes. If you can see any then it's waaaay too much.
Even if you can shift it with a bar it's too much. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
