Grommet and connector references
Hello Very Happy

I am fitting additional long beam headlights onto my Defender and I would need some LR references and good tips. I think Defender2.net is the best place for asking Wink

1) In order to get my wires into the battery box, I would like to swap the rigid capping currently fitted with a rubber grommet (like the one on the right hand side of the picture). It is approximately 4-5cm wide. I am looking for the LR reference for this grommet ...

2) I have a free connector, under my cubby-box, which is probably designed to connect the optional factory Alpine subwoofer. I would like to use the positive and earth from this cable to connect the switch that will drive my headlamps' relay. Would someone know where I could find a "male" connector which I could crimp then plug into this one ?

3) Any idea of the reference of the cable-tie pictured on this drawing ? (it is from the LR headlamp installation manual)

Thanks in advance !! Very Happy
Fabien

there is enough free play in those grommets to push extra cables throught them along side the existing cables, even if you put the extra cables in additional (smaller) conduit. Land Rover themselves advocate this when fitting the towing electrics for example.

Good to know Thumbs Up But I prefer to use an additional hole/grommet. This makes my work easier, since I usually crimp and make the whole wiring on a workbench, including fitting the grommet onto the wiring ... then fit it onto the car. That's why I need to a dedicated grommet Mr. Green

Thanks Jomara ! That will be useful for another work ... but quite different from what I'm currently looking for. I am really looking for the factory style grommet Wink

I don't know whether this is any good for you but on my older Defender there is are 2 grommets on the tunnel part of the bulkhead which are easy to get access to via the cab, under the carpets.
It's number 11 on this diagram and the part number is MTC1650, there is one either side. I used one of them to run a cb aerial into the cab

Unfortunately, Polevolt only post to the UK Sad

Land Rover don't list the battery cable grommets separately, they come with the battery cables.

However, they do list these grommets as spare parts, you'll have to measure the diameter of the hole to determine the correct size -

http://new.lrcat.com/#!/1235/2632/2988/227

The style of grommet you need is Callout 2, the part numbers for which, are -

233244 - GROMMET BLACK CABLE 3 X 19MM

233243 - GROMMET BLACK CABLE 3 X 25.5MM

269257 - GROMMET BLACK CABLE 6 X 33.5MM

555711 - GROMMET CABLE 6 X 33.5MM RED

276054 - GROMMET BLACK CABLE 6 X 41.5MM

589452 - GROMMET BLACK CABLE 7 X 53MM

233566 - GROMMET CABLE 12.5 X 48MM RED

Yes Thumbs Up I'll take the measurement but I'm pretty sure one of those will fit perfectly !

Many thanks Wink

Ouch ! Finally, according to my measurements, none of them will fit perfectly (diam. 4.7mm) Big Cry

The closest would be the the ref.233566 ... but its 12,5mm hole is too wide, I'm afraid.

So, I'm considering drilling a 25mm hole into the rigid capping in order to fit a rubber grommet on it. That might work Whistle

Hello !

Some unexpected (good) news : I finally realized that the free opening was probably smaller than I initially thought.

So, I ordered a grommet ref. 276054 (6 X 41.5MM), just in case I would be lucky. And I was : this grommet fits perfectly well in the opening !!

Thanks you all for your good tips Very Happy

Fabien

As that grommet fits perfect that's brilliant. (Thank you for letting us know Fabian.)

I assume the hole is 40mm or possibly 41 mm dia? If the grommet is 41.5 dia.
I don't suppose anyone knows off the top of their head?

If not I can accurately measure anyway, I may need an additional hole or two added for cable routing. No Guts, No Glory.

It's probably 42mm or thereabouts. The spec. of the grommet will be for the hole it fits in rather than the outer diameter. Darren

Ah yes, good call I'm thinking of the dimensions the opposite way around aren't I. Thumbs Up

I'll give it a measure with the micrometer to be sure.
I was considering using ip68 glands but the just don't look right especially from underneath.
(Mainly because of their size and protrusion.) No Guts, No Glory.
