I see the sticky about the 2.2lt, and how it briefly mentions the 'recommended by Ford' Engine oil to be "WSS-M2C913-B (or C) standard" and many say Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W30 A1 (B2/B5) is the only one... but...
I recently had my neighbour assist me with an Oil Change (my engine has done 63000 miles), and after he 'accessed' Ford's system to get the specs needed, he sourced Champion Fully Synthetic 5w40 which he says "exceeds Ford wss-m2c917a and asea c3-10". I sort of trusted him, as he has renovated old cars and engines for 40yrs, but everything I have read says that the 2.4lt Puma should be ASEA A or B, and only the 2.2lt should use C. And what concerns me is when I read here: http://www.oilspecifications.org/ford.php that it says 917A is "engine oil for pump injector diesel engines.". Is this correct, and am I currently damaging my engine using the oil he has used? How does the A,B, and C value affect the engine that does or does not have the DPF? Thanks heaps in advance! According my dealer the recommended oil for a Puma 2.4 is not good enough for the Puma 2.2 with DPF, but the correct grade for the latter is perfect also for the former.
Just checked a recent invoice which included an engine oil and filter change for my Puma 2.4, and they used Castrol EDGE C1 Professional 5W-30. So they use the Puma 2.2 with DPF oil for all the Pumas now. Eric You never actually own a Defender. okay... interesting to know. So the DPF dictates the Oil. But anyone know the difference between C1 and C3-10? 2008, 2.4 Puma 110, Silver, 7 seats, sunroof, Winter pack, not enough mud on it!

yes, the DPF dictates the oil. This because you need an oil which doesn't leave any ash, as this would clog the DPF very quickly.

As Naks says, it's the Ash content. I read some articles in the US about using low Ash oil in non-DPF cars and the general consensus is that having low Ash oil in an otherwise compliant engine/oil can only be a good thing. Cleaner, less crud, freer flowing etc. I'll be specifically using the higher grade in my oil change this very weekend because of the low ash qualities. I've given my exhaust pipe a good wire brushing (fnarr, fnarr) to see how dark and sooty it becomes compared with now... Monsieur Le Grenadier

of course, the ideal thing to do would be to remove the DPF and also the CAT --

Interesting at that link on their webpage, they state "Castrol recommends for your Land Rover Defender, L316 (1990-2016) " listing the Oil as 'A5', when I am sure that 2012 onwards with the 2.2 Puma, you cannot use A5 Oils in your engine??? It has to be 'C' rated Oil as I am discussing here... 2008, 2.4 Puma 110, Silver, 7 seats, sunroof, Winter pack, not enough mud on it! |

^^^ I think you need to select 110 Td4 DPF if that is what you have.
Then if you list yourself as a consumer they have no recommendation... http://applications.castrol.com/oilselecto...2011-2016) but if you list yourself as a workshop owner they recommend Castrol Edge Professional C1 5w-30 http://applications.castrol.com/oilselecto...2011-2016) Theoretically trade only, but in the UK you can get from Amazon etc |
