Hello folks,
I've just obtained two virtually brand new front doors for my 90 (from a reputable breaker) and I need to repaint them to match. I've done a fair amount of repair painting, where stripping back to bare metal is part of the process but nothing like changing the colour of what is already perfectly good paint. Do I just need to give them a good flatting off with some 800 grit wet and dry or is something more technical in order? I'll be brush painting them with cellulose paint, which is blue whilst the doors are white. I'm contemplating a quick coat of grey primer first to aid with the colour change. What do you think? Any advice appreciated. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? Personally I would test in an inconspicuous place that the nitrocellulose paint you intend to use does not cause an adverse reaction in the original water-based paint. A splodge on the inside of the door should do.
I would categorically not go to bare metal since you'll get better adhesion onto good original paint than you can achieve on bare metal as a DIY job. You'll have no trouble painting over a white substrate. |

Hence why you would prime the door, to avoid such problems.
I've just painted this DAF after some muppet decided to brush paint it with cellulose, There was a right mixture of paints on it going back through the years. Originally it was red, then white, a good high build primer was used and I never had any trouble with reaction. Equally water based paints shouldn't give you any issues. It's all in the prep.... Alert do not use cellulose out of the gun unless you have first determined what paint the white is, because if it is two pack then cellulose won't go over 2k unless you put a coat of isolater over the 2k first it’s the thinners you mix with celly that is the problem, if you don’t use an isolater you run the risk of the paint 'pickling'.
To be fair cellulose only likes cellulose. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Sorry, my mistake. The paint I'll be using is coach enamel. Darren
