Sorry if this has been covered before (please post link if it has) I did a search and couldn't find what I need to know....
I want to wire up some new work lights to my 2010 HT 90 I'm in need of some advice on how to do this please! This is what I'm wiring up 2x 12w LED 12V lights towards the top of both the rear panels above the rear windows http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4X-12W-LED-Work-...SwOdpXypMR I'd like to wire them in to a switch on the dash I have a few spare/blank sockets to choose from in the cluster above the radio. Is there a genuine LR work light switch I can purchase for the job? I'd like to switch them on/off regardless of the ignition being on. Obviously I'm going to need to drill through the rear panel to run the work light wire in to each side I'm guessing a grommet in the hole with the wire running through it? Hate drilling holes in my truck.... So how and where would I run the wires to or from? Do I need a relay or an inline fuse? Where can I pick the power up from? Is there anything permanently live at the rear of my truck that is already switched at the front on the dash? Any advice would be helpful 2010 Defender 90 HT The longer I live..... For an LED light of that wattage you don't need a relay as long as you choose a suitably rated switch. You could probably adapt an OE switch but you'd either have to put up with an odd graphic on it or faff around modding a blank.
There are lots of ways to do the wirings so this is just one idea: in the off-side rear light cluster is a spare purple wire that's permanently live. It's fused at 10 amps, IIRC. Install your work lights and earth them locally. Run a pair of wires from the back light cluster to wherever you want the switch in the front. Connect one end to the purple wire and the other to the live on the light and you're done. Getting the wires to the front can either be done around the edge of the roof trim and down the A pillar or out of the bottom of the light cluster, along the chassis to eh engine bay and then up and through the bulkhead. Installing the lights can be exactly as you describe. When I installed mine I used a tight fitting rubber grommet but a cable gland would work too, if you've got the space behind the light. I added a bit more control to mine with a couple of relays that means it comes on automatically if the reverse light and side lights are on. An on-off-on switch allows me to also turn it on independently. Now that I think about it, somebody was selling some OE-looking switches with a worklight graphic on here recently. I think they were imported from Aus and cost around £30 each. I'm pretty sure that they all went but it does mean that they are available. Darren
