Hi All,
I have an issue with my front grille, the one below the plastic one which I'm not impressed about on a 2 yr old vehicle. The paint has come off and it looks like the grille was oxidised + has flaked off. I've heard of this before and think I've read about it on here but has anyone experience of it and what was the outcome re;warranty as mines in for its second service on Fri and I'll be "discussing" it with them ?? Thanks, Mark |

You should get it resprayed by LR under warranty. Or just bite the bullet and get a stainless steel grille James

Thanks All,
It's sounding encouraging and i'll let you know how I get on Depending whats said I'm thinking of either getting a stainless one, getting mine powder coated or making a mesh one as I have a fine mesh behind my main grille Mark |

The problem is they seem to make this grille from the cheapest ally they can, so i think there's little point getting your existing one powder coated, as it'll likelly only last another couple of years. There are stainless ones available both in bare stainless or powder coated black.
I fitted a cheap Britpart stainless one, it's fine. |

During manufactiure, the grille is fitted to the surround in bare aluminium. It is then painted attached to the front panel
The bare aluminium that is hidden then corrodes. I agree with others on here and fitted a stainless grille after mine flaked at about 18 months Problem sorted. I expected if the original grille was well painted first and then fitted, it might last a bit longer IMHO Brian 2015 90 XS Santorini Black |

So instead fitting the stainless one is it better to strip the original aluminium one, acf it and leave it bare? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

just one small consideration - I had mine done last year under LR warranty and wished I hadn't bothered.
its now sprayed "of a piece" with the surrounding fascia so if and when the grill part corrodes again (and I would like to replace it with stainless or whatever) I'm going to have a bigger mess to clear up rather than a simple grill only replacement. I hadn't anticipated they would spray it like that but it makes sense seeing as its riveted rather than screwed so arguably for a paint shop "one part"... ---edit--- just read Vitesse' post above - maybe I hadn't properly noticed it was painted as an assembly before the warranty work. It is certainly quite a "thickly" painted assembly after it... cheers |

I've just bought a stainless mesh one, I intend to fit this weekend, I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of getting it done under warranty, and then it happening again in a couple of years, I've done the same with the windscreen blocks and got some CNC'd alloy ones, hopefully I'll fit them and not have to worry about it again.

Very much a personal choice. Rather than the hassle of a warranty claim, and the 70 mile round trip to the dealers, on my last Defender I rubbed it down and sprayed it satin black, as a contrast to the orkney grey grill.
The latest Defender was Dinitrol'd from new at the back of the lower grill. I also did all the internal grill fixings with clear Dinitrol too. Learning from previous experience |
