It's also a clutch pack type LSD instead of the gear driven variant.

Hi,
Been told that the ATBs don't react well to big tyres. Anyone has feedback on how well they work with let's say 35" tyres? |

They work exceedingly well with 255/85 x 16 tyres.

That's the size I have right now.
I'm considering to order an ATB this week for the rear, then if I like it maybe get one for the front also. I might go for 315/75R16 in the future, want to be sure the ATB diffs keep the job with that |

is the P38 spacer ring necessary when installing in a Puma rear diff? --

If yours is a 90" then you do not need the spacer. Puma 110" SW

well finally got round to fitting one of my Ashcroft ATBs into my rear axle.
Swapped the crown wheel over from the standard diff adjusted the bearings per the manual, all went well and completed on the drive in just over 3 hrs start to finish. Most difficult bits were getting the back lash right (you need a DTI) and holding the diff when you torque up the crown wheel bolts and bearing carrier bolts as I only have a 1 ton vice it was only just big enough. otherwise a rewarding job. found that one of the drive shaft flanges was starting to fret (rust dust in the cap) , the other appeared to be locktited on!! I thought 90s had 1 piece shafts! so knocked them both off (yes they were very tight) cleaned the splines greased and refitted. Only driven 30 miles or so but no noticeable difference on the road, once I have about 500 miles on it if its OK will have a go at the front. PS the diff that came out looks in A1 condition only 20k miles and no abuse DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Hi,
Did you need a spacer between the crown wheel and atb or in lieu of that have you adjusted the bearings? Any photo to compliment the work |

Being a 90 its a straight swap and the bearings on the carrier are adjusted to set the backlash and become pre-loaded in the process. (Used new carrier bearings)
Didn't need to touch the pinion bearings as used the original carrier and crown wheel so everything ends up in the same position give or take a few 0.01mm's everything you need is describes on Ashcrofts web site DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

So, if your only replacing the centre of the diff with the ATB and leaving all the other parts the same, it's just mesh and backlash/prelod you need to worry about?
I'm thinking of building these into my diffs but the only guides I can find are full rebuilds rather than just the centre of the diff being swapped. I have only done 20k miles so don't think it's worth stripping the lot and a full rebuild. (Thoughts) Cheers |
