There's a thread on here somewhere about the special locking spanner required.
Some have done it with a sharp tap on the spanner with a hammer I failed with the above but a sds drill on hammer action only and chisel loosened it with barely a mark on the nut good luck |

The TD5 one doesn't fit the Puma engine, but yes it's well worth having the proper tool if you intend to keep the car. There are ways around it, but they almost always end up marring the components.
For the Puma you need ref: 303-1334 from here - http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Tools2002-p4.html Sadly there are few universal fitting tools for locking viscous fans, every engine manufacturer is different, so those universal ones that are available only fit a few different cars. |

There is no need for the specisl tool. Just use a hammer to hit the spanner counterclockwise with a strong but short stroke. Maybe you need to repeat ist, but it normally works that way. |

Thanks for that but I had already seen that. I more interested in the actual spanner size to remove the van. I ended up finding some info off the Aulro site along with some photos and a pdf doc to make your own...
cheers.. oh... just read more from the link.... should have read further down and not just looked at the photos ![]() Rob 1995 Defender Tdi 110Wgn 2010 Defender PUMA 110Wgn TRIPS: Meanderingdownunder WikiLoc Trips |

Is the nut really counterclockwise to undo, as the viscous fan nut on my D3 is a left hand thread, so have been clockwise to undo? I've been hammering away on a counterclockwise and nothing has moved? |

Td5 spanner locking kit does fit if you just add two short bolts to two of the holes in the locking part.td5 picks up on bolts heads on pulley, tdci has holes in pulley which added studs can go into.
Alternative is spanner near vertical and sharp tap down with lump hammer with emphasis to the side that is undo. Different engine different thread. So hitting top end on of spanner rather than side. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

One of these works pretty well to hold the pulley.
