2.2 TDCi Defender disconnecting battery (security code)

Hi All

I would like to install the towbar electric kit on my Defender. The kit instructions advise to disconnect the battery first. The LR owners manual says that if I disconnect the battery, the management electronics reset and I will have to "tune in" my immobiliser again using the Security Code. There is my problem: I don't have a code.

Will I have to take the Defender to a LR dealer to extract the code?

I disconnected my 2.2 2013 110 battery and I didn't have to reset anything. V8 90...WIP

It may just mean you have to press unlock 4 times on the fob (or lock, I can never recall).

But then, that's just a guess...

As for a code, where would you even enter that?? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

There's a procedure given in the handbook involving turning the ignition on and off the same number of times to match each code number, then opening and closing the door to register the number

LR will give me my code if I present my V5 and ID.

I'll follow PaulV8's advice, then if the system re-sets, I will point the defender at Mecca (or Solihull) and use the methodology as per the manual.

I did the towbar electrics the other weekend using a pre made kit from pf jones. Their instruction said disconnect the negative, which I forgot to do

However I didn't have any issues, if you're only doing trailer electrics then it just plugs in anyway, if you're doing caravan charging circuit as well, just make sure you remove the in line fuses from the wiring kit before connecting the wires to the battery then once it's all tight you can put the fuses back in.
Tip: don't know about other models but on the 2.2 if you run the battery terminal nut all the way up the thread and back down again it will reform the thread and you will be able to fit the wiring kit rings to the extra thread using another m6 nut on top of the main one. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Pretty much any electrical work on a car the workshop manuals will advise disconnecting the battery for safety reasons. In reality you rarely need to do so unless you're working on large live cables like the starter feed or fuse boxes. In a workshop it also stops someone from driving the car away while you're underneath it.

For the trailer electrics there's no reason to disconnect the battery, just plug the electrics in, job done.
