Turbo intermittently working - need help!
Hi All,

My TD5 XS (2004) has started to develop a fault where the turbo doesn't kick in when it should. I can be driving one day and all is fine and the next day for the fist 500 or 800 yards the turbo does not kick in at any rev or speed. Sometimes it can be a mile or two before the turbo kicks in. I have taken it to a local guy (4BY4 SPECIALIST) and he says it does not do it when he has it. This is now getting worse and I need to solve it as I have to pull out on a 60 MPH road at the end of the lane, even checking it is clear to do so I still manage to pull out and end up getting in the way of someone!

There is little rhyme nor reason to when it does decide to work but seems to kick in (at some point) during a trip!

The XS has only done 74K and is solid otherwise. Any help would be appreciated greatly! Also have a 2009 60th edition but it hasn't got the carrying capability that i need at the moment so need to sort it soon!

It could be the turbo or the MAP sensor, or something completely different. Roel

Are you sure it's the turbo? Or just a lack of pull. Try unplugging the maf and driving about for a day or two. Ray

MAF == Mass Air Flow meter. The thing with wires in near the airbox. It's a couple of wires that when heated can calculate the flow of air. The problem is it can get mucky. if you disconnect the plug it will run on default settings which may make it better.

I personally suspect the turbo, leaking air pipe, or intercooler has broken. I had a turbo that was wobbling so much that the blade would stick to the housing so wouldn't spin up. You can get to the turbo easy to check it...just take the pipe off and wiggle the end.

Intercooler maybe faulty and letting air out until it self-seals with pressure.

But start looking for cheap and obvious first. Also, do a search for cleaning the map sensor on the inlet manifold.
