After much research on here I bought a Varta LFD90 a few weeks ago. All I can say is that it works, was the same dimensions as the original and.... errr comes in smart silver grey colour! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I've gone for a Varta too, a Silver Dynamic. The size you need is a 019 and Tayna have a good selection and decent service.
https://www.tayna.co.uk/Type-019-Varta-Sil...P3127.html You don't need an AGM battery unless you're regularly turning the vehicle upside down. Things like Odysseys are available and you do get good cranking amps and useable capacity in a package that's a bit smaller, the cost is that they're very expensive. Don't bee too led by the fact that an Odyssey has lower headline capacity, they're actually rated to a lower depth of discharge than a standard flooded battery so overall usable capacity is about the same. That said, I wouldn't choose one myself because they are so expensive for negligible benefit for most applications in a Defender. |

Doing a search on the Varta website for suitable batteries for a Defender Tdci turns up these two results.

Maybe I will replace it at 9 years young later this year before the next winter just for the piece of mind, but point is that it is holding its charge perfectly for weeks at length so I might postpone by another year. 2007 here still on it's original Varta (I've owned it since 2008).
Will replace with same, no issues yet, although it's driven regularly with only the occasional 3 days max without moving. |

I've got a Yuasa one from Halfords, it's the same size (and reference number) as the original, but it's 100Ah instead of 90Ah and the CCA is higher too.

If you were happy with the battery that lasted 7 years then why not go for the same one again. I assume it was a genuine LR one (which is a Varta and is very good quality). I understand that the exact spec matching battery that Varta supply to Land Rover is not available through Varta. If I remember correctly the LR batteries is a combined leisure battery.
There was a post some time ago that explained it all. If you are doing dual batteries in the future then you could use two of the LR Genuine ones. They do fit into the battery box with some fiddling and revision of the clamps/terminals and some patience. Because they're over £200. Don't get me wrong the Genuine Land Rover batteries are good, but i don't think they're £200 good. There might be an advantage to them if you're doing a lot of winching, but for normal use there are plenty of much cheaper and equally good quality ones available. 7 years seems to be about the average life of most car batteries i've had. Some have lasted a bit longer, but i've usually noticed a difference once a new one was fitted, which suggests the old one was getting tired long before it finally died. |

No matter which battery you have invest in a CTEK charger with a battery reconditioning mode and every two years or sooner use that mode and you will get the maximum life out of your battery.

 Click image to enlarge I believe this is the latest part number for Defender Puma battery. Superseded from YGD500160. That price for the Genuine one is plus VAT. Interestingly for the Britpart fans it seems that their OEM battery for a Defender Puma is a Lucas. I am unaware that Lucas have ever been fitted to a Puma so would then worry about the quality of other Britpart OEM products..... I am not with the vehicle at the moment as it is parked up elsewhere but two of the YGD500160 batteries fitted into the battery box. I am on the same battery atm new in 2008
Changed out a battery in a works td5 few months ago which was new in 2004. Not bad I dont think Chris 2008 XS 110 2.4 Utility. Tonga Green 1953 Series 1 for restoration 1983 Mini Mayfair 2004 VW T5 Camper 2008 Diahatsu Sirion. Thats hers Classic Bolens Garden Tractors |
