The tdci has developed a constant rattle from the top front of the engine that increases in frequency with revs i.e. the faster the engine the faster the rattle.
Rattle starts when the engine is started and is continuous. It sounds like a badly adjusted tappet on a well used Ford petrol engine from the 1980's. I've read alot on here about rattles but cannot find anything with the same symptoms. Anyone experienced something similar - or any ideas? Thanks |

as above. nip up the bolt and see if the noise stops. It'll probably want the injectors pulling and new sealing washers fitting, but it's not a big job.

Hi.
Bit of a newbie here but I have a similar symptom which may give you yet another avenue to explore. I recently bought my 07 Puma 2.4. Went like an absolute rocket but on any acceleration through the range enormous black smoke bellowed out the exhaust, but no rattle. After much investigation £££ they blanked the ECU and remapped the EGU to a standard LR map and it drives much more sedately, no smoke but now rattles like a goodun! So I shall watch your post with interest. Grouse |

Now it's stopped raining I've checked the injectors and they seem to be OK. Rather than pulling too much apart I'll book it in to my indie and let you know the outcome.

Less likely but check if the red lifting bracket at the rear near the ECU is loose?
Two flanged set screws at the rear of the block. If it's your issue it's possible there is only one ![]() Remove it either way... I know it's not the front, but noise can do weird things. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Thanks Mulder - removed that bracket some years ago!
Have checked all other known loose bits - no luck. Have a feeling that this is either simple and cheap (Lightningtweeds suggestion) or deeper and much more expensive. |

Just looked at a you tube recording of a transit with cam carrier problems - it sounds like mine.

Again, a bit of a stretch but I do know that on two occasions I have solved combustion timing related noise by doing a VCV relearn and then a pilot correction process with my diagnostic tool. The pilot correction especially is the ducks nuts.
From 'tappy knocky' around 1900-2000 rpm to smoothest ride ever. The first time I did it was also with a new VCV, the second without. I'm pretty sure it's the pilot correction that solves it. Now I just need to learn what causes the slow slip out of tolerance - something something fuel pump? The difference really is night and day. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Nope can't find the clip again - there seem to be loads related to Transit engine knocks - far too many for comfort!
