Car theft
So it's not just Land Rover that are desirable. The poor man who has lost his life defending his property is sickening. What has it come to when thieves priorities stealing vehicles before life. What next?

I was shocked to read about this. As the police officer said, the official advice is quite different and academic from what most of us would instintively do in the situation. We would defend our property as best we can.
So sad. My sympathy to his family. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Unfortunately life is cheaper to some sections of society.
Sickening to think that the car was found abandoned a few miles away, so they were only stealing it for a joy ride anyway. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Not sure it was a joy ride - front wheel was destroyed making the car undriveable. Harsher sentencing should be imposed if they are prepared to take someone's life for a car.

very sad. not just what has happened here but it's the same old......

I'd like to suggest a few ideas but I'm afraid the 'do gooders' will shoot me down so I'll leave it to your imagination but needless to say the suggestion of harsher sentences falls into my 'wholly' understated category'.

condolences to the family and friends.

I for one am glad that it is being dealt with as a case of murder rather then causing death by dangerous driving.

It would appear that the stolen vehicle was deliberately used as a weapon therefore in my view that would be murder.

I hope that anyone is found guilty of murder then they receive a suitable sentence.

I do not consider a 27 month jail sentence (out in about 13-14 months) for killing someone whilst trying to send a facebook message on mobile phone whilst driving! here

A 15 year prison sentence and a lifetime driving ban would have been more appropriate. I seem to recall that a birthday lasts for 24 hours - couldn't she wait until she pulled up somewhere safe before sending the message - it would still have arrived on her birthday and the poor gentleman would still be alive. Defender 90XS SW

I think that you are all missing the point here and that is we must make way for these imprtant people. You know who they are, they are often seem behind the steering wheels of certain makes of car, driving too fast in built up areas. When their phone rings we must make allowance for the likelihood that they will a) drive erratically or b) stop in the middle of the road wherever that may be.. .
We must make way for them when they drive down the slip road at 70 mph without any indications and demand that you give way and let them in, because is not their imortance evident. We have all seen their friendly wave.
Surely , it is only reasonable to give up ones possessions to these people, who otherwise might have to get a job or save their money to acquire their own when ours is available for the taking? The police themselves are even now downgrading theft to a non crime, only logicalal when you think about it, it is far easier to reduce the crime figures by failing to record it than it is to attempt that most difficult of tasks , solving it, cheaper too. Unless there is income from fines like speeding, the incentive has gone
We could all live in a come free envoroment at the stoke of a pen!
I feel so must better now, now, where was that Overfinch that I fancied.
Flipant, maybe, and certainly no disrespect intended towards that poor chaps family, I can only imagine what they will be going through and do not envy them the utter disparate that comes with learning of a most inappropriate sentence handed down to the individual (s) whose rights must be protected.
