It's something that I'd wanted to do since my 20s but 20 years went by and I entered the ballot over 10 times and never got in.

I then managed to get to my 40th birthday and I'd gone from 11st whippet to 17 Stone! and a BMI that told me I was clinically obese.

I also failed to get in for 2017 but luckily a friend who is a Scout master heard about a place that the local Scouts get in exchange for manning the water stations on route. It was offered with a 'just see what you can do' fund raising target which I could get behind as I work for myself and I don't like asking for money and some of the 'guaranteed charity places' have £1000s as a minimum amount.

Anyway...

I ran 3:58 (when I started I couldn't run 5k)

Lost 4 stone training (and I'm much happier / fitter / heathlier / etc.)

Raised over £1000 for a small inner city Scout group who are really pleased.

So all in all it was a good day. Thumbs Up

That is a great effort to shift that timber, it sort of creeps up on you doesn't it?!

The ballot system seems jolly harsh. I spoke to one runner who had been drawn 3 out of the last 6 years, and another who like you had waited for years.

Will you carry on with the running now (not today obviously)?!

Yes, will run but not as much. The sheer time taken to do the training was the biggest issue. Young family, work etc it's quite a commitment.

So for me I've done London, bucket list ticked (if I was going to do a Marathon it was 'The one')

Ran under 4hours which was the target I'd set (I'm just not built for running so I don't want to go quicker)

Had a brilliant day but I won't be back and won't run another Marathon.

Cheeky half in the summer though just so I don't get lazy
