Not sure about lights but spare wheels are definitely tested if present. They're one of those weird ones; you don't have to have one but if you have it has to work.
I guess the same could be true of extra lights etc. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Solihull, 1948 - "If we paint the chassis, it will last for years" Solihull, 2015 - "If we paint the chassis............................. |

Mine had its mot last week and if the tester didn't know me it would have failed..... The reason being, I had given him the spare set of keys with no fuel cap key and apparently they have to check the fuel cap seal integrity Ray

I have the standard lockable fuel cap and every MOT has an advisory that the temporary cap has to be replaced!

Not true, it's not a testable item. If a tester happens to notice that it's cracked and falling to bits they can give you an advisory for it, but it has never been a reason for failure. Point 4.1 of the MOT inspection manual;
Given that Defender wheels are usually hung on the back door and very visible they're easily noticed.
That's not true either. Section 1.9 MOT Manual
So a push on rubber cover isn't going to stop them looking.
Spotlights don't have to work in the MOT. However they are supposed to go out when the headlamps are dipped or have covers fitted to them if they don't(which effectively means they're no longer lamps). Other than that unless they have dangerously exposed edges or perhaps liable to fall off the vehicle they're not a fail.
Almost. Clear plastic covers are ok, like the clear headlamp protectors Land Rover sell. Usually in the manual it specifically says if a tester should remove a cover from an item to test it. Basically it's common sense. If it's just a push on cover like a trailer socket cover it'll say remove it if present. But they're not allowed to go dismantling half the car. It's all here; https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/doc...000101.htm |

Because the tester is an idiot.
Not quite. It wouldn't have "failed" per se, but he could have refused to test it. The difference being if it failed they'd have charged you and issued you with a failure. However a refusal to test isn't chargable and they have to refund you if you've paid.

Some of it really does go beyond sensible conclusion lately I do admit. No Guts, No Glory.

My favourite is the "arse covering" advisories you get. like "covers fitted to engine bay, preventing inspection", which pretty much all modern cars have fitted from the factory these days.
So if the battery turns out to be insecure, the tester can't be blamed for passing it because it had two screws holding a cover on. |
