285/75 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 83.39cm
265/75 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 80.39cm
235/85 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 80.59cm
So you get 3cm more diff clearance assuming I've done the maths right. BFG AT 235/85 are 126.50 and the same in 285/75 are 142.60 at camskill so assuming for the case of argument that's what you pay, you're paying 80 quid for 3 cm of ground clearance on the tyres alone, plus you need different wheels to the boosts and quite a bit more than 80 quid.
I'm all for modifications, but this is one I don't understand. Ok if you're doing challenge events in your purpose built trayback then you might want big simex tyres etc, but for standard defender use ie road, green lanes, beach, quarry etc, I'm not getting this 285 thing Or is it just that they look better? If so then fair enough
Not quite sure why I need to explain how or on what I spend my hard earned money but hopefully you meant it in a light hearted way so here goes.
I bought my 5 x 285's BFG and 16 x 8.5 wheels and tyres for 500 quid from someone who had bought them and never got round to fitting (well he did but only for a 950 miles), he needed some cash quick and I had some in my pocket at the time. Lucky I guess. Apart from our 90 which has 255's BFG muds on all my defenders have had either 235's or 750's. Don't have anything against them or any problems apart from I think they look a bit skinny. I do like the look the 285's give the vehicle but can't see many advantages over the 235's. The only disadvantage I can think of is the muck they throw up against the sides of the panels just after I have spent hours cleaning it, but hey its a land rover and looks good dirty. There is no two defenders the same and we all make ours just a little different than the next one, thats the attraction I think. Might go for 265s next time but probably stick with 285s when they wear out which might be some time yet.

Agree the big pain with 285's is the amount of crap they throw up, in winter it takes only a few miles before you can't see out the side windows, I was contemplating fitting wider arches if i'd kept my 285's. The 255 85 16's give a circ of 83.9cm so are a smidgen taller than 285 75 16. the 285's always look good though Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I love 255's but you really need a lift to use them and from what some have said Puma's don't like being lifted.

Now I don't profes to know what's best but if you follow the link they say that 7x16 is good for up to 300mm

Russ, I wouldn't trust that.... It is the tyre company that lays out the peramaters or their tyres. Also you will find out that some 285s are only 275 wide and others can be upto 305 wide depending on what tollerences they are made to.

Don't worry I was just pointing out some thing I had come across. Russell

My thinking was, the're the same diameter as the 285's and they didn't rub so the 255' should be OK I'll have to get her on full articulation and find out Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

What is the issue with a 2" lift. Lots has been said about puma not liking but what is the real issue. My td5 had no issues at all so I'm struggling to understand this one.
My pref would be 255's but not spending the cash if they cause issues. Looks like Mr sensible will stick to 265's just now. Defender 110 County SW

However they are a bunch of crooks anyway so I would not take the slightest bit of notice at all. I have had work done to my 110 at Marshalls under warrantee and they were happy with the 285s and so I think it is up to who you use.
That's interesting - sounds like they are being really picky to get out of paying for anything. So much for customer satisfaction
I guess that as 285s are not on the current option list and never were for the Puma they can do that. John
