Not sure, previous owner rebuilt the Defender using Disco1 engine and axes etc but receipts show Td5 transfer box so it may be the same as the Disco box. Jeff

Worth considering Syncro Gearboxes as they offer this too and can rebuild with a higher strength I ternals 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Hi
I am beginning to think I may keep the standard gearbox ratios but opt for the uprated bearings. At the same time fit a recon 1.2 transfer box. Has anybody done this on a 300tdi and are happy with it? |

At the moment my engine is quite poorly on account of A) head gasket failure or B) water pump failure... I am very much hoping for the latter. But yes my engine is not entirely standard a TD5 with a remap, egr delete, full size intercooler, hoses, standard turbo (but new) and an uprated exhaust manifold. When she was working (last Sunday) she was absolutley superb and will be again once this little issue has been resolved... I have a 110 CSW, full roll cage, winch out front, a Disco transfer box and standard sized wheels and tyres.
Love her to bits. Which ironically she is her current state |

I've got the v8 fifth gear in my 300tdi 130 with a 1.2 tbox and rolling on 33.12.50.15's. I like it and would advise anyone getting a new box build for a defender to get it fitted. But would think about what sort of driving you do in your defender before fitting a 1.2 transfer box.

Hi Muddychris
what a combination I didnt think a v8 fifth gear and a 1.2 transfer box would work on a 130 with its extra weight, I think my 90 will have no problem at all with a standard gearbox and a 1.2 transfer box now. Is you engine heavily modified? |

it came with a Allisport full size intercooler but I don't know if the fuel had been turned up. It doesn't really smoke. I've got it up for sale but if your anywhere near Derby before it sells your than welcome to have a drive.

I think if somebody has gone to the expense of fitting an allisport intercooler they will have upped the fuel delivery.
So I have still not heard from anybody with a standard 300tdi motor!! |

I too would be interested in hearing from someone with a standard 300 with the 1.2 box. I've been pondering about this for a while now, I do a fair bit of motorway driving up and down the country, so the quieter ride would make life more pleasant, trouble is I do nearly as much towing as I do motorway work, sometimes bob at the same time, and from what I understand, standard 300s don't like towing with the 1.2 box very much, so in this case would the upgraded intercooler and fueling solve this? Could do with someone who had a standard 300 and fitted both mods to come along and enlighten us.

I've had a standard tdi with a 1.2 transfer box on my 90 and I hated it. It's fine on the motorway but anywhere else the gear ratios are all wrong with second and third particularly in the wrong place with regards to speed and being on turbo.
If you do nothing but motorway miles buy a euro box, it'll pay for itself quite quickly compared to your defender. If you drive round town and country roads you'll hate what it does to the drivability of your Defender. Thus my advice is leave 1.2 transfer boxes attached to the shopping trollies they came from 😊 Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Thanks for the latest opinions.
So if it is felt that the 1.2 transfer box is not a good option and the ratios were wrong what was the Discovery 300tdi like to drive and tow with? I would imagine the Discovery 300tdi would be considerably heavier than a Defender as well or am I missing something here? |
