Hi Tobes, the original aerial has a non-detatchable cable so unless you want to solder the new cable to the old one, i see a little possibility here. Of course you could use (without need to solder anything) a male and female plugs, those that you can simply screw on the existing cable (OMG i hope you can understand this one  )
Anyway, if you decide to run the new cable in the dashboard is pretty easy: cut the old cable near the broken mast, use it to drive a metal wire through the rubber seal in behind the dashboard, and then use this one to pull the new cable in. I did it with mine when i replaced the aerial and it took 5 minutes to have the new cable fitted. hope it helps  |

Many thanks for that. I'd seen the tip about using another cable to pull it through, and the dealer confirms that there's no way to replace just the mast. That's exactly the sort of, er, 'individual' design that makes us love Landys so much...
Now if I'm going to that effort, then I may as well pull through a couple of extra cables and make it an electric aerial. I've already decided to swap out the radio (whilst it's out of the slot, might as well do so), can anyone recommend an aerial that will fit? Do I have to make any further mods to get it in? As my sig suggests, I don't trust my DIY skills  ---

Had a very successful weekend's tinkering. By removing the wing-top panel I was able to release the old aerial. I nipped into Halfrauds for a DIN release tool to remove the head unit. However, there was no way that the cable was going to pull through in either direction, a call to the local main dealer confirmed that this is apparently a s*d of a job on ABS-kitted Defenders, since the cable snags on the ABS unit in the wing-top.
Instead I cut the old aerial off, fitted a female RF connector and plugged the new one into it. I get a slight amount of RF interference off the engine at low revs, but since my listening is confined to Radio 4, I'm not bothered about that. It means that any future breakages can be replaced in just a few minutes. I dropped in a brand new Sony head unit that swallows a whole iPod instead of a CD, and that's just brilliant. The kids love the remote control that came with it. Also popped in front and rear Pioneer speakers with no problem (the front speaker grilles use torque screws, whilst the rear ones use pozidrives, so make sure you've got the right drivers before you start. If even I can do this, then anyone can... Anyone know how easy it would be to replace the stupid metal retractable aerial with one of those old-school rubber ones? --
