You need a "speedo healer" to correct the speed signal being sent from the speedo down to the ECU. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Had a similar thing with the cruise control in my 2005 Td5. A friend kindly wired in a couple of switches as per the link on the previous page and it worked perfectly. Total cost was about £10 for a few lengths of wire and some ECU connectors.
Later on the mainshaft in the gearbox collapsed and I upgraded it to a v8 5th gear ratio. After that CC would engage but knock off after 5 seconds. Last weekend I plumbed in a Speedohealer and set the reduction to 7% and all is good once again. At the same time i fitted a D2 switch onto the column and very happy with the outcome. That looks familiar! Same install on mine. I needed a to shave the internal metal a little to fit but seemed ok.

Thanks Green Machine I had a spare Carling switch on the dash which is used as the on/off.
Steve - it may well have been your photo that promoted me to use the D2 switch! Very pleased with it so thank you I also had to trim a bit off the underside of the metal bracket on the column. Click image to enlarge |

Hi a Martin. There is now a defender specific speedo healer. Costs about £70. Ashcroft, flatdog, paddocks, trek overland and others sell them.

That's the same as the one I used, it had a Britpart sticker on the packaging but inside is branded as Healtech. The instructions by Ashcroft say to attach it near to the transfer box plug but that would also adjust the speedo reading. I popped mine beside the ECU which Grafty99 suggested, it alters the signal just before it enters the ECU but does't affect the speedo. |
