HELP HELP mad electrical problem
Hi,

Just went to do a quick little problem solving and got a full blown nightmare on my hands. So initial problem was that my horn wasn't working, after a long time checking fuses and continuity I suspected the 4 wink indicator unit I bought from Alive, disconnected the piggy back cables that come off the indicator stalk and lo and behold horn works. OK I thought no problem, take it off send it back.

Now for the real problem.

So disconnected the piggy back cables off the indicator stalk, then disconnected the piggy power cable off the switched ignition live off the back of the ignition barrel. Then put the original white cable on the back of the ignition barrel and the ignition came on (key was in, but off position), turned the key to ignition on and off, no difference, started the car, then switched key off, and engine still running, took key out and engine still running. Had to stall it to stop. Then disconnected the battery (alarm came on), no difference. So basically the ignition is stuck on with or without the key on.

What have I done, effectively I have only pulled off the switched ignition live, and put it back on, and ignition is stuck on.

Help please, need the car for tomorrow!

Sounds as if you have electrically connnetced ignition live to permanent live.

This would give you ignition live permanently live with or without the key.

As it is you need to keep the battery disconnected until you've sorted the issue or the battery will be drained. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Steve, thanks, yes I would agree that is what I thought, but I only disconnected one wire and put the same one (albeit without the piggy back on) on the same tab, cant see how I could have done it?

You should really have disconnected the battery first, I assume you didn't?

Are you 100% sure it was the same connection that was made?
Is there possibility something was disturbed in the same vicinity? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

OK, now sorted, Steve took your words to heart, it had to be the only answer, just couldn't see how.

So went back out, and wondered how I have done it. Then of course it fell into place. I had disconnected the piggy back cable by pulling out from behind without looking because you have a bit of spare cable. Then looked through the little hole you can see the back of the ignition barrel, with the cowls removed, and I could see a spare tab, which of course must have been the spare tab on the constant live. So when I went back out had a proper look, there was the correct tab, in an even more difficult position to get to, but hey ho, it is the solution.

Plugged it up properly and all is well. Thanks Steve for your wisdom, and yes I confess I didn't disconnect the battery, but in my defense I did only nip out to go and fix the horn, funny how one thing leads another.

Your welcome.
If it's very isolated circuit then not disconnecting the battery is okay for speed of work completion and ease.
The trouble is when working with various electrical bunched wiring in one place, in particular confined areas.
Is that you can easily cause a short by accident, you'd have no idea until a fault develops or once on the road and something doesn't work.

None the less, glad you've got it sorted. Thumbs Up

I once left the hazard switch disconnected, thought nothing of it.
That was until I went out and only noticed my indicators weren't working when I got beeped at! Shocked
Luckily I hadn't gone far but it was interesting using hand signals to go back down the lanes to get home.
