have you check the transfer box. they'd obviously messed with mine and hadn't quite fully engaged it back into high ratio and that was causing the back lash sound until it slipped into neutral !
sorry to hear your troubles |

But in this one I have had no clutch problems at all. Tranmission was fine when it went in so what could they have done to make it like this?

If andrews theory is correct (rought engine causes clutch failures) then the update which is making the engine run rough is making the transmission take more load...hence why you could be having a problem. Shame...like my dealer - i didnt expect them to change the MAF...but I bet MAF then EGR are the faults not the ECU...but then we are getting to a generation were they dont fix the problem, just flash the ecu and replace everything else. Thats why they charge £100ph + VAT Mike |

Not sure that is a good idea Last time I used their lack of action as evidence and presented it to Mr Popham who in return gave me another land rover . I would have thought if they remember me I would be the last they would want to help This is not my normal dealers as Marshall’s of Bedford who I normally use could not fix the leaks so I have no choice but to use Hartwell (can't understand why they are able to keep the franchise) of Northampton. They are very arrogant and rude generally regard defender owners as 3rd class citizens. When I was looking to my first Puma one of the sales man was very rude to my wife and suggested we look at the Peugeot as they were probably more in our price range. We drove straight to Marshalls ordered one on the spot and I paid by cheque for the full amount when it arrive. Anyway that not the problem, I am happy leaving it but I was thinking of writing to the service manager to registrar my concern. I’ll be honest here I am at my wits end with land rover. I have spent far too much money on it to date with tunes and accessories, what are the odds of buy two lemons? The thing is before December is really was not that bad, but over night it has turned in to a nightmare again. Land Rovers are a way of life to me, I don’t really have any other hobbies and nor do we take fancy holidays just take the 110 round Europe. I am not going through what I went through with the last one but will simply sell it and get something else. Sorry for the boring rant. Think I will just leave it as it is for a few days and see how I feel. I am going to replace the MAF to see if that makes any difference. Boy |

Boy, sorry to hear of the troubles mate.
Silly question..... can you simply disconnect the MAF and run her around for a while as a control experiment? (just to save cost of new MAF if no difference) Have heard this done on Td5's but not sure about on PUMAs... maybe the electronics trigger limp mode automatically if no feed from MAF detected.... ??? Anyhow.... probably a stupid observation...... I'm good at them Hope it all sorts itself out through Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

No...simply. The MAF has a flow direction and basically heats up to a known temp and then is cooled by the air. As the density of air changes given induction, altitude and abient temperature - the difference between the cooling affect and the KNOWN MAF temperature is messured - this then controlls the comustion. I theorise that there is a condition between the MAF working and failed - where it miss reads (i think Pete is of the same opinion) and therefore it reads the temperature incorrectly, resulting in its understanding of the ambient conditions differently to actual conditions and finally this results in a miss fueling based on conditions that dont exsist and thus lower MPG. This is common - VW's suffered this - certainly new beatles. I changed 4 on ours!! you could track it when mpg dropped...fortunately the LR MAF's are cheaper i recall teh VW ones being close to £70 from the dealer. I should add, there will be evidence of a MAF playing up Mike Last edited by mse on 25th Feb 2011 9:58am. Edited 1 time in total |

Mike This is what I was thinking also. It had to go in for the leaky roof anyway so I asked them if they would change the MAF and EGR as I suspected one had partly failed and was the probable cause. I also asked them to check the viscous fan as this runs fixed intermittently with running cold, warm and hot. They have rejected all these points and simply down loaded the new update into the ecu. I had no choice. Is this reversible? Had they simply fixed the roof and said no nothing wrong with the MAF & EGR then I would have simply ordered the parts myself and fitted them. But now as it is running rough and clanking I feel it’s pointless as now i have more problems than before. A step backward if you like. Thanks for all the other replys too |

You can ask them to show you the log file from the IDS (scan). They keep such info for a couple of weeks. Puma 110" SW

First problem is sorted.
Just been down to the an independant so he could check which track rod end have gone and he was happy to report that he could not find any wear in any of them. So good job I never paid Hartwells the 305 quid for new ones. So at least thats sorted Boy |
