We have a defender with the 300tdi from a Discovery in, so unsure of the accurate mileage of the engine, and its service history (easily over 100k miles though).
I am just about to give it an oil and filter change (and drop the sump to try and re-seal it), and was wondering peoples views on running some engine flush in it before the change. Am I just going to block things up internally, or cause it to let oil past the rings, etc? Thanks Andy |

Been doing a little more Googling since I posted, and agree with you Balvaig.
The sun is out, the wifes in work, our lad is in school, I'm off work today ( the joys of being a woeful shift worker), so outside I go!!! (Just hope I ordered the correct oil filter now!! ) Andy |

I wouldn't flush, but if you find nasty gunk when you drop the sump I'd be inclined to do a couple of oil changes in reasonably rapid succession.

There's always been two schools of thought on engine flushes.
One is don't do it as it loosens up any sludge in there which can block the smaller oil ways, it also washes sludge away from oil seals and makes them leak. The other is do it because sludge in an engine is not good, the vast majority will end up in the sump and filter then be drained out when you change the oil. I've done flushes on various engines and had no noticable problems. On the other hand the only benefit i've ever noticed is some times it's quietened down hydraulic tappets. Most decent oil these days contains detergent anyway, so theoretically if changed often it should be pretty clean. |

I'm of the school of thought that the only thing going in my engine is oil. If i wish to give it a bit of a "flush" then get a 25 litre barrel of oil and change it every couple of thousand miles for a a while!

Even engine oil has detergent in it, so that would work just over a longer period of time.
