Best paint for a caravan roof ?
Hi all,
Just brought a dry but aging caravan, which was green all over, due to be sat for a few years,

With a lot of jet washing and scrubbing it has come up quite respectable,
Well all part from the roof, that has be stained good n proper with blackness,
Was thinking of reprinting just the roof ?
However not sure what paint to use / how to apply it ?

I'm after quite a good finish but hasn't got to be showroom,

I have spray gun and compressor, but guessing doing that outside will be messy and quite awkward to reach/ cover well ?

So maybe a roller / brush ?
Thinking roller so I can put it on a longer pole to reach all the areas,

So if I'm to go that route is there any recommendations for paint makes / type and your thoughts on the above questions ??

Thanks in advance

Richard

Hello Daisy90

First suggestion is to use what's on there currently...or a near equivalent

If it's Painted Aluminum, then it may be either:
Cellulose (old type before this was discontinued (banned))
or it may be a
Stove Enamel (higher cost and durable finish applied to higher end Vans)

So for now... use a conventional Car Paint or an Enamel, both can be sprayed
(and both can be applied by a roller... Exclamation )

Preparation
If any bare aluminium is exposed when keying the surface (Wet and Dry) use an etch primer (ACID Etch 8 Halfords will do)

Application
Spaying is best, and even if you go down the 'Roller Route', you need almost the same conditions, weather, masking off etc.
If you Roller then consider using a Varnish Roller (very fine sponge roller) and the results can be very good
Thin the paint so that it's just a bit thicker than if you were to put this through a gun.
(I did our two garage doors with Hammerite, smooth matt textured finish, and you just can't tell that it was applied with a 5 inch varnish roller)

There is a chance that your caravan roof is fiberglass (like ours) in which case there are gell coat type refinishing products or you can go down the Car Paint Route...

Good Luck... SKIP

Going by the state mine gets into over the winter, a good coating of marine anti-fouling paint would be best.
