My wipers are click-clacking every wipe, and on some wipes cover a lot more of the screen than other times.
Is that something I need to worry about, should I be doing any sort of preventative maintenance or do they all do that? I can't say I've really noticed it before. |

Mine do the same,which I'd assumed was part of the defenders character. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

Mine doesn't do that, sounds like slack in the mechanism? I would imagine that is why with each movement. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Wear in the wheel boxes, mine were doing this last winter, thinking a full strip down and rebuild would be the only cure?
As a tempory measure I took the rubber grommets off the spindle shafts and gave it a good dose of spray grease, a year later they are still holding out! 
I think it's a job for the spring/summer now, as I've noticed the wipers starting to sweep over the windscreen rubber now. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I think on mine, some of the noise comes from the blades themselves. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The frost finished my passenger wiper off a few weeks ago, turned out to be the wheel drive and long drive shaft from the motor . All the genuine parts needed were less than £60 , including new wiper blades. The dig problem is that the dash has to come out to gain access to said parts, so I got my mechanic mate to do it .
Have found in the past that if the wipers are working but a bit noisy, some new good quality blades can make a difference until it needs overhauling. Nick |

Wheelboxes. They're about 25 quid each for genuine landrover ones. You gotta take the entire dash out to replace them so probably worth changing the wiper rack as well. Think that's about 20quid as well.
Get some silicone wiper blades and the washer jets off something German and the whole setup is a lot better. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

i done a write up on it, search for "wiper replacement 2004 model" and you will find it. This only covers later Td5 models though.

I would agree with the others, it'll be the wheel boxes. They're the same ones used on minis, moggies etc, dating back to the 60's
The spindles in them are made out of cheap of alloy, they never last long. |

On a puma I would say its a dash out job. Especially if you're changing both wheelboxes and the rack. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

You don't need to remove the dash on a Puma, but you do need to free it completely from the bulkhead and pull it a few inches away from the bulkhead to get the wheelboxes out.
If you are not changing the wheelboxes, jsut the motor, park switch, or drive rack, you certainly don't need to remove the bulkhead. In my expeerience, provided that all parts are lubricated properly on assembly, the wiper drive mechanism on the Puma has a life expectancy of approx 100,000 miles. I replaced mine the first time around 100k, and the second is getting clackety and loose at 205k miles and will probably need replaciog sometime in the coming year. In the UK climate, that is a lot of wiping though! |

Mine are only on 33k miles 
Maybe I'll order the spare parts in the hope that will scare them in to being repliable. Being stuck without wipers would suck. I guess if they do fail it's just a sudden end to wiping rather than something gradual? |
