If you run with them loose long enough they will jam, however usually they can be unjammed by waggling the wiper arm. I have had this happen to me.

If you are unlucky enough to have a wiper actually jam, remember to sort it out asap since even with the wiper switch in the off position the motor will be trying to park the wipers. Although there is (allegedly) thermal protection on the motor, your problems would become much more expensive if you manage to burn the motor out.

Also remember when you waggle the wiper that if the ignition is on the wipers will mimediately park when unjammed, so watch out for those digits!

In extremis (and obviously not for road use) if you have one wiper which is jamming repeatedly due to a worn wheelbox, if you remove that arm from its spindle it will then generall allow the other wiper to run normally (the unloaded spindle generally won't jam). This may get you out of trouble. Since the wipers only run through a 120 degree arc, you can also remove the arms, pull the drive rack out, rotate the spindles 180 degrees, do the same for the rack in the motor gearbox, and refit, and a new unworn part of the rack will be engaged with an unworn sector of the spindle drive gear in the wheelbox. Again this should buy you a few thousand miles of time. It isn't a long term solution since part of the wear will be to the area of the wheelbox that holds the rack engaged with the gear, and this can only be altered by removing the wheelbox.

I must admit my wheelboxes seized up with the white aluminium corrosion. so when i replaced them i put plenty of grease around them!

Ah, I've not had that happen, but that would cause total, unfixable seizure!

Mine had gone slow due to friction from rust inside the spindle. The wiper struggled to start turning them (I used to help them by hand until they had done a cycle) and then they'd be OK for the rest of the day. Leave them off for a couple of days and they'd be stuck again.

When I replaced them I couldn't even turn the one side by hand off the vehicle, so fair play to the wiper motor for doing as well as it did. Ended up replacing the lot, wiper motor with park switch, cable and the two wiper boxes. No more clackety clak Smile

Normally they seize solid on vehicles that aren't used frequently.

But use them too much and they wear out. Laughing

As the folks have said above, probably the wheelboxes.

Eventually the wiper rack will miss the teeth and stick- I had to sort this last year on my 05' TD5.

As a temporary fix you can put the rack out, cover it in loads of grease, rotate the wheelboxes through 180 degrees using the spindles on the outside and then reassemble.

When you do change the wiper wheels and the rack be prepared for a couple of hours of hand punishing misery- if you can find an assistant with small hands and a fantastic memory to remember where all the ever-so-slightly different screws go I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Even after doing this mine slap about a bit- and this is due to the wear in the worm drive and cambox on the wiper motor- I have decided that using Rain X regularly is a cheap solution to this for now......

I've got the same, discussed recently in another thread.

Parts are in the mail (got the rack too, but not switch will try to refurbish that myself if need be), if I have time I'll photograph the fix process.. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

You should be able to get 2 used out of each rack and each wheelbox by turning them 180 degrees. Mine lasted 95,000 miles. You can only very slightly hear them of the engines off but running you can't hear a thing. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.
