1st Major Service
Just booked the Defender into LR for 1st Major Service (17k 2 years old).

£775 ...... My AM is cheaper than this!!! Seriously.... Is this normal pricing ?? My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

For a main dealer yes.

But you don't have to use a main dealer, any VAT registered garage can service it without it affecting your warranty - EU block exemption rules removed that clause from car warranties. Very Happy

haggle they will reduce the price if you challenge it especially if you have other lower quotes DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I was also horrified at a similar quote for first service.

I got some money off (still seemed very expensive to me though) when I pointed out that the Defender was designed to be serviced in the field with a lump hammer and gaffer tape, so what were they going to do to it to justify the cost..

Apparently the service manager found this funny and knocked (I seem to recall) £100 off the cost.

Second service too it to local independent of good repute, and paid less than half for the second (more comprehensive) service.

Third service and first MOT due in a couple of months, will be going back to the inde...

If you go to a non dealer, make sure you get your corrosion stuff checked by a dealer. I fell foul of that on my last Defender. Local dealer (York) wouldn't help, Ripon were much better and managed to sort it with Land Rover, but now I just pay the £20 to have a dealer check and sign-off.
I have heard on non-dealer being able to sign the corrosion stuff, but not sure of the details - would love to hear more from others on here.

Just been through the same - quoted £750+ for a second service from 3 local LR dealerships. Hugely excessive for such basic stuff! Went with a local independent recommended from this forum for £300 - they change a couple of extra filters over the dealership too (he did tell me, but can't remember which ones now!).

Just got this response from Westover in Salisbury...

The 2nd year service on a Defender is £743.62 inc parts labour and VAT.

The service replaces, oil and oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and axle fluids are also replaced. The servicing takes longer on a Defender due to a more ‘basic’ design and layout which in turn costs more to do as you have more to adjust and check.

I can't believe how many on here actually even consider the main stealer. Imo they are wildly over priced and the quality of work isnt great. Especially when it is so easy to service a Fender at home, only need a ratchet and a couple sockets.

I'm about to book mine into my nearest JLR garage here. It'll be interesting to see what they charge for a Defender. Our Freelander costs nothing like the prices you guys are talking about.

If you have a look at the T&C's for the factory warranty it says any VAT registered garage can service it. Manufacturers were restricted from forcing you to use their workshops under EU block exemption rules.

Technically they don't even have to use genuine parts, so long as they're equivalent they're ok. However you're giving LR an escape route in the event of a warranty claim if you do. ie. if your big end bearings fail, they can claim that it's a result of using an after market oil filter.

Though obviously Land Rover and their dealerships, aren't that forthcoming in "promoting" this, it is never the less there. Wink

They are correct in a way. On a defender you spend a bit of time checking over suspension fixings and tightening them etc. Adjusting a steering box isn't something you'll see on a modern car. And you wont find grease nipples on an Evoque.

That being said it's nothing an independent specialist wont do for half the price!
